PORTLAND, Ore. – A woman was killed and another person was injured after they were hit by a car while crossing a street in Southeast Portland Sunday night.

Police said Lindsay A. Leonard, 23, of Southeast Portland was killed when she was struck in or very near to a marked pedestrian crossing across from a Fred Meyer store located at Southeast Foster Road and Southeast 80th Avenue at about 8:30 p.m.

Another person, Jessica Finlay, 28, also from Southeast Portland, was walking with Leonard and was also hit and injured. Finlay was taken to a local hospital. Her condition has not been released.

Police said the driver of the Chevy Impala that hit the women was driving as part of their job and they said it did not appear that the driver, who has not been identified, was impaired. The driver stopped and cooperated with police, according to investigators.

A streetlight over the crosswalk was not working while KATU News was reporting on the incident Monday morning before dawn and nearby residents told KATU News the crosswalk is dimly lit. It was dark at the time of the incident.

One person who witnessed the collision said he didn’t think the driver of the car or the pedestrians saw each other before the collision.

A witness tried to help the injured women just after the accident but Leonard died at the scene.

Police continue to investigate the fatal incident, which is the latest in a rash of pedestrians being hit by cars.

Another crash involving a pedestrian closed highway 217 for two hours on Sunday. Deputies said the man had been walking southbound on the shoulder when he stepped out into traffic and was struck by a car. The man was taken to OHSU with life-threatening injuries.

On Friday night, another pedestrian was hit trying to cross Interstate 5 in Wilsonville and on Saturday, a man was hit on Highway 99E in Aurora.
