PORTLAND, Ore. - Fire investigators say they know what caused a house fire in southeast Portland Tuesday morning - combustibles too close to a baseboard heater.

Two men escaped the fast-moving blaze but two cats and a dog in the home perished. Two other dogs escaped.

Portland Fire and Rescue crews arrived at the home in the 6700 block of Southeast 67th Avenue just before 5 a.m. to find the home fully engulfed in flames.

Lt. Allen Oswalt said early responders reported flames were coming from every window of the home when crews arrived.

Crews were able to put down the fire using high-volume water hoses. One firefighter was injured when he reportedly fell on a chainsaw and hurt his leg.

He was able to walk to an ambulance without assistance but was taken to a hospital for treatment. Lt. Oswalt said the saw was running at the time and the the firefighter may have slipped while operating the saw.

Damage was estimated at $80,000.

Firefighters said they have responded to numerous other heater-caused fires this fall and urge people to keep items at least three feet away from heaters.
