Beaverton crash ends with car in pond
The following is a press release from the Beaverton Police Department:
On Nov. 3, at 6:32 a.m. Beaverton police were called to the scene of a crash where a car was said to have landed in a small body of water. When officers arrived they found Cheryl Lynne Ohlson's Dodge Caravan in the pond, just off Southwest Murray Boulevard near Southwest Teal Boulevard. (Web note: The "pond" has been identified as Murrayhill Lake.)
Witnesses told police traffic had been flowing at the posted speed limit; some motorists even slowed to make a right hand turn off Southwest Murray Boulevard onto Southwest Teal Boulevard. Then a car - later determined to be Ohlson's van - was seen traveling southbound on Murray, at a very high rate of speed.
Witnesses said it didn't appear Ohlson attempted to slow down when approaching traffic. She instead veered to the left of the slowed vehicles, causing her van to sideswipe the rear-left quarter panel of a Dodge Durango.
After striking the Durango, Ohlson swerved to the right again and drove over the curb near a Verizon utility box, just south of Teal Boulevard. Ohlson struck the utility box, continuing in a southwest direction through the grass, headed straight for the pond.
Ohlson's van drove through the shrubs and off the small embankment causing the van to become air born, an estimated 25 to 30 feet, before coming to rest on the bank of the pond, partially submerged.
Although Ohlson was unable to clearly explain her actions, she did admit to speeding.
No injuries were reported. Ohlson was cited for driving uninsured, driving while suspended and reckless driving.
