PORTLAND, Ore. - A high-speed police chase came to an end Wednesday afternoon on East Burnside and 12th Avenue with the arrest of a man.

Police arrested 41-year-old Franklin Bearcub and held him in the Multnomah County Jail on an outstanding probation violation. He is also a suspect in a string of bank robberies.

Police said the suspect they caught may be the “Fantasia Bandit” who they said is responsible for robberies of 10 businesses and banks in five weeks. But neither police nor the FBI would confirm or deny if Bearcub is connected to the “Fantasia Bandit” robberies.

The FBI said the “Fantasia Bandit” is responsible for a series of bank robberies in Portland. The FBI dubbed the suspect the “Fantasia Bandit” because they said he has also robbed a Fantasy for Adults Only store twice.

The events that led up to the chase started at about 1 p.m. when police said the suspect robbed the HomeStreet Bank on Northwest 23rd. The suspect got away in that robbery.

But within an hour, employees at Albina Community Bank on Northeast 57th & Sandy Boulevard reported a suspicious man who fled as police converged on the neighborhood. That led to the chase down Interstate 84.

The suspect pulled off at the Lloyd Center off-ramp as he was being chased by half-dozen police cars. Part of the chase was captured on ODOT cameras.

Police eventually cut off the driver and the chase ended with the car crashing at the five-way intersection of East Burnside and 12th.

Ken Ristau, manager of the Portland Rock Gym, watched the events unfold from the window that looks out on the intersection as police pinned the vehicle then arrested the driver.

“We were a little bit surprised at the amount of police with such an average-looking guy, but hearing his background, would obviously make it a little more intense,” he said.
