HILLSBORO, Ore. - Neighbors who live near a Hillsboro woman who received probation after pleading no contest to numerous animal neglect charges say they think she may be hoarding animals again.

Miriam Sakewitz pleaded no contest to animal neglect charges stemming from the discovery of hundreds of dead and dying rabbits on her property in October of 2006.

Even after the animals were taken away, Sakewitz found out where the live rabbits were and stole them back from a holding facility.

This week, a judge gave her two five-year terms of probation. Her neighbors say they think she got away with a lot and are not happy to see her back.

They say they see signs that Sakewitz may again be collecting animals, despite a court order for her to have no animals in her custody during her five year probation period.

"I don't put it past her to do it again and matter of fact I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't have animals over there right now," one neighbor said.

Neighbors say Sakewitz has changed the locks on her shed and keeps window coverings closed most all of the time.

On her porch, KATU discovered a blanket covered in rabbit feces.

A neighbor who did not want to be identified for fear of retaliation said the new locks on the sheds leads her to believe Sakewitz is again holding animals.

Hillsboro police, who say Sakewitz cut through a chain and lock to steal back her animals, have upped security of the rabbits now under their care.

They say they recognize the strong attachment Sakewitz has with the rabbits and therefore keep them under constant surveillance.

But they also say that Sakewitz has shown she cannot care for large numbers of animals.

Sakewitz forfeited all claims to the confiscated rabbits when she pleaded no contest, now officials are hoping to begin adoption operations over the next few weeks.
