Coastal residents clean up, prepare for next storm

Casey Dusenberry of Barview, Ore. works Wednesday to fix his roof after part of it was damaged during Monday's storm before another round of storms roll in the rest of this week.

CANNON BEACH, Ore. – Gusty winds blew across the northern and central Oregon Coast Wednesday and while forecasters predicted tonight’s storm will be weaker than Monday’s, many aren’t taking any chances.

On Monday night Casey Dusenberry of Barview sustained damage to the roof of his house.

“It just tore off about two rafters back, probably 20 feet of roof,” he said. “Lot better than last time - it took about half the roof off and all the power.”

As Dusenberry worked Wednesday to put his roof back together, emergency managers watched the approaching storm closely and said they expect gusts around 70 mph.

During the day the sea churned threateningly at the Barview Jetty with the wind constantly blowing, but overall the central coast only expected a few inches of rain from Wednesday night’s storm.

Gordon McCraw from Tillamook County Emergency Management said he hoped that will keep the rivers, especially the Nehalem from flooding.

“The rivers here in Tillamook are falling quite rapidly over the storm we just had,” he said. “So hopefully, the rainfalls this time will go as forecasted.”

During the wait, people like Dusenberry are working against the clock to keep the damage they have already from getting worse.

Emergency managers said the worst thing a person can do is to go to the beach and watch the storm roll in. They said if people don’t need to be out to stay home, because if Wednesday night’s storm turns out worse than expected, then people could get seriously hurt.
