Shooting spree highlights Oregon campus safety
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The Oregon University System expressed its concern and sympathy for the students, faculty, staff, families and campus community at Virginia Tech who suffered at the hands of a gunman yesterday.
     
Oregon University System Chancellor George Pernsteiner said the state's "thoughts and prayers" are with those affected by the terrible incident.
     
The Oregon University System campuses organized counseling services for its own students who may need support. And they are also working with local public safety partners to address campus and individual concerns.
     
The chancellor said each campus has an emergency preparedness plan in place for student and campus community safety in the event of any type of crisis.
     
Law enforcement agencies train and plan for tactical responses to these types of incidents in Oregon's schools and on its campuses.
