This is car that took the brunt of Shawn Schumacher's bullets Saturday afternoon - fatally injuring the passenger inside.
CORNELIUS, Ore. - Washington County deputies are filling in the pieces for some of the events surrounding Saturday's shooting rampage that stretched from Hillsboro to Cornelius.
At 1:24 p.m., Hillsboro police received a report of a male shooting a gun out of his vehicle after ramming into several other vehicles in the area of Southeast Baseline Street and Southeast 10th Avenue in Hillsboro. A Hillsboro officer reportedly saw the incident and attempted to apprehend the suspect.
"The suspect [then] drove his 1997 Honda Civic - at a high rate of speed - westbound on Southeast Baseline Street, leaving the city of Hillsboro and heading toward the city of Cornelius," reports a Washington County press release. "It was reported the suspect shot at least once from his vehicle at the pursuing officer."
The suspect was later identified as 28-year-old Shawn Schumacher from Hillsboro.
Washington County sheriff deputies and Cornelius police officers responded to assist the Hillsboro officer. They report that Schumacher was "driving recklessly and passing vehicles dangerously, with no regard for the safety of others as he entered the city of Cornelius."
Cornelius officers and a sheriffs deputy tried to set up spike strips "to flatten the tires of Mr. Schumacher's vehicle" at North Adair Street and North 13th Avenue. However, they ran out of time.
Instead, they said Schumacher took care of stopping himself. Driving "very fast" through Cornelius, he collided with a Ford van while attempting to pass on the right in heavy traffic.
The impact with the van caused extensive damage to Schumacher's vehicle, rendering it immobile. It was reported he was slumped over the steering wheel immediately after the crash.
A sheriff's deputy and two Cornelius officers approached Schumacher's crashed vehicle. As they did, they said Schumacher "emerged with a handgun in each hand and started shooting at them."
Schumacher is believed to have shot at least one bullet into a patrol car. The deputy and officers said they returned fire.
Schumacher was struck with more than one bullet, and was pronounced dead at the scene. The deputy and police officers were not harmed during this incident.
The Westside Interagency Narcotics Team searched Schumacher's residence in the 1000 block of Southeast Nazomi Avenue in Hillsboro. That team found evidence of a mescaline lab. (Mescaline is a hallucinogenic). The medical examiner's office will conduct a toxicology exam to determine if Schumacher was under the influence of any drugs.
The deputy and officers were placed on paid administrative leave until the incident is reviewed by a Washington County District Attorney - standard procedure in "officer-involved shootings." Their names are not being released by authorities at this time.
