VANCOUVER, Wash. - A 15-year-old sophomore from Mountainview High School is dead after police say she overdosed on drugs over the weekend during the school's prom.

Shelby Howard was taken to a Vancouver-area hospital Saturday night.  Her condition was so serious that she was then transferred to a Portland-area hospital, where she later died.

Detectives are now waiting on toxicology results to find out which drug the teenager took.

Friend Amanda Wence said Howard was always smiling.   "She was really friendly," Wence said.  "She was always the first person to go up and say hi to you."

Others said she was great at tutoring pre-schoolers and wanted to be an artist or a writer. Friends of the family said it was the first time Howard had ever tried drugs.

Meanwhile, police have interviewed several people who were with Howard before she died.  No arrests have been made.

Anyone with information that may help in the investigation is asked to call the Vancouver Police Tip Line at (360) 487-7399.
