PORTLAND, Ore. - A fire that started Friday at a Southwest Portland apartment complex has landed one occupant in jail. Police have arrested 48-year-old David Lee Meacker, who lived in now-burned-out apartment 410.

They're saying Meacker set off an explosion in his apartment that sparked the fire, causing $10,000 in fire damage and untold water damage once sprinklers were activated. A swarm of fire personnel responded to the scene, including four engines, two trucks and 39 firefighters on Friday afternoon.

Portland Fire & Rescue responded to the Bronaugh Apartments, 1434 S.W. Morrison St., at 3:29 p.m. Friday. When fire crews arrived at 3:31 p.m. they report finding dark smoke coming from a third-story apartment window.

"Firefighters immediately entered the building and extinguished the fire," reports Lieutenant Rich Tyler, a spokesperson for Portland Fire & Rescue. "The sprinkler in the apartment had been activated by the heat of the fire and had helped contain the fire. The fire was under control at 4:01 p.m."

Firefighters received information that an explosion may have occurred that started the fire. Five fire investigators were called to investigate the origin of the fire.

Investigators deemed that the fire was initiated from Meacker's apartment, No. 410, and that Meacker was home at the time of the incident. He was arrested and charged of one count of arson I and one Measure 11 count of arson. The Measure 11 count requires prison time of at least 7 1/2 years for arson "when the offense represented a threat of serious physical injury."

Meacker was booked at Multnomah County Detention Center and will be arraigned 2:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7. His bail has been set at $300,000.

This is the second major fire at the Bronaugh Apartments in just over a year. In August 2008, a woman died and two others were injured when a mattress caught fire - also on the fourth floor.
