PORTLAND, Ore. - With temperatures falling into the 20s and the teens, frozen pipes burst from Salem to Vancouver Tuesday night.
It took Jamie Davis by surprise when her pipes froze in her Vancouver home. As the pipes began to thaw, the water pressure against the ice was too much and the pipes burst.
“I came home from work today," Davis said, "and it was just gushing water.”
She said her mother had some important advice for her last night. She told her to drip her faucets, open the plumbing cupboards, and insulate her outdoor faucets. She said she didn’t do any of it but now wishes she had.
It could be two or three days before she has hot water again.
It was a scenario that played out again and again across the area Tuesday.
At a Hindu temple in Tigard they weren’t aware of a problem until alarms went off. Then they found the mess: a hole in the ceiling where pipes burst, soaking the carpet and everything else two floors down.
A similar situation played out at the Woodside Estates Apartments in Salem. Three units were badly damaged when the pipes burst in an upper unit which caused part of the ceiling to cave in and damage two floors below.
How about you? Any damage to your pipes, either this year or in years past? How did you cope?
