Truck hits, kills local man walking on foggy I-5

AZALEA, Ore. – A Beaverton man was hit while walking on Interstate 5 more than 200 miles from home early Wednesday.

Oregon State Police received a call around 6:20 a.m. Wednesday reporting a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian south of Roseburg, near milepost 88, on southbound Interstate 5. The identify of the man was released just this afternoon.

The victim has been identified as 26-year-old Jason Daniel Fugazzi of Beaverton.

One lane of I-5 southbound near exit 88 was closed for five hours for the investigation.

State troopers report a 2003 Ford crew-cab pickup truck driven by 80-year-old Carl Ford of Azalea, was traveling in the slow lane of traffic when troopers say Fuggazi was "walking in the middle" of the truck's lane.

The driver cited dark and foggy conditions, and simply said he did not have enough time to react. No word as to why Fugazzi was why he was more than 200 miles from home, or even why he was in the road.

KATU.com staff placed a called to Fugazzi's Beaverton home trying to piece this together. No one answered the family phone.

The drivers of two vehicles behind Ford's pickup witnessed the accident. No other injuries were reported

Troopers said an off-duty Glendale ambulance was nearby and responded "almost immediately." However, Fugazzi was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The pickup impacted the pedestrian towards the right front of the hood area," said Oregon State Police Sergeant Steve Mitchell, "and that caused the body to travel probably at least 175 feet down the roadway where it came to rest."
