Man who tied up neighbor receives prison time
ROSEBURG, Ore. – A La Pine man convicted last week of assaulting and kidnapping his neighbor over a property water dispute in October 2008 has been sentenced to 7 1/2 years in prison.
Deputy District Attorney Steve Hoddle said Michael Derrington, 64, tied up his neighbor – 53-year-old Mark Spruill – for more than 17 hours in the Dry Creek area of Douglas County.
Derrington also shoved a gun in the man's mouth and fired a shot next to the victim's head.
Derrington and his wife had been living in a tent, while the victim was living in a nearby cabin on the property.
Derrington's wife, Nona Schwabe, has pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnapping, assault and unauthorized use of a vehicle. No trial date has been set.
