PORTLAND, Ore. - A lot of low-income families will soon have a nice salmon dinner thanks to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, which donated approximately 75,000 pounds of Coho to the Oregon Food Bank.

"This will really go a long ways in providing protein to families throughout Oregon and Clark County, Washington," said Oregon Food Bank CEO Rachel Bristol.

The 2009 salmon run was one of the largest in a decade and the extra Coho was shipped to American Canadian Fisheries, which processed the fish for free before sending it to the Oregon Food Bank.

The food bank gets a donation of salmon every year but this was by far the largest they had ever received. Last year, they got just over 20,000 pounds.
