CLACKAMAS, Ore. - A man was killed early Monday morning when a Clackamas Country Sheriff's Deputy shot the suspect who they say was armed with two knives.

The female deputy, a 19-year veteran, is on paid administrative leave following the shooting, which is standard policy for the sheriff's office.

The shooting took place about 3:30 a.m. in a parking lot on Southeast 82nd Drive near the Highway 212 interchange.

Deputies received a 911 call that a man in the Greenhouse Square Shopping Center parking lot was acting suspiciously.

According to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, the deputy encountered a man who was standing in a phone booth. She reportedly called back to dispatch to say the man had a knife.

She repeatedly told the man to drop his weapon. She then used her radio to inform dispatch the man had two knives.

After repeated calls for the man to drop his weapons went unheeded, and the subject began to advance on the deputy, she opened fire. The man later died at a hospital.

William Vetor, who was near the scene of the shooting, said he heard three gunshots.

The man who was shot and killed has been identified as Luke Lewis Seal, 24, with a last known address in southeast Portland.

Two people who left balloons and flowers at the site of the shooting said Seal left behind a 3-year-old son. (They are pictured below.)

The mother of Seal's child, Kristy Collins, e-mailed a statement to the media Monday:

"Luke Seal was a loving father who lived everyday for his son.  I am very saddened by this loss and have no idea how I’ll ever tell his son what happened.  I had known Luke for 4 years and never stopped caring about him.

To his family, all I can say is I am so sorry for your loss and you will be in my prayers.  Luke’s memory will live on through his son’s heart and likeness.  His son will know that his father loved him and did the best he knew how to do.

All I can do right now is pray that Luke has found the peace he has searched for, for so long."

Collins is pictured with her son below.

The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office and Oregon State Police are investigating the incident.
