Grant County deputy killed in car crash

Deputy John Bernard

EPHRATA, Wash. -- A Grant County Sheriff's deputy was killed Sunday evening when his patrol car crashed and rolled over.

John Bernard, 52, was on patrol around 7:20 p.m. when the crash occurred on Road 5-NW at SR-283, about nine miles south of Ephrata, said Sheriff Frank DeTrolio.

Medics and other deputies raced to the crash site, but Bernard was pronounced dead at the scene. DeTrolio said Bernard's cruiser was the only vehicle involved in the crash.

Bernard had been with the Grant County Sheriff's Office for four years, and he previously served as a Grant County Corrections Officer from 1997 to 2002.

He joined the City of Ephrata Police Department as a patrol officer in 2002, serving until 2006 when he became a Sheriff's Deputy.

Bernard is survived by his wife and two sons, one of whom is also a Grant County Sheriff's Deputy.

Undersheriff John Turley said the road was wet, but there was no snow or ice.

Bernard was wearing a seat belt and was not on his way to an emergency but had just cleared another call.

The State Patrol is still looking into exactly what caused the crash.
