TV reporter spots body in Willamette River
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) - Lane County sheriff's deputies are investigating the death of a man who was spotted face down in the Willamette River near the Glenwood Bridge.
The unidentified man was found Wednesday afternoon by KVAL-TV Reporter Carla Castano. She was working on an unrelated story in the area. Castano called 911.
When Springfield fire officials arrived, the man was already dead. He appeared to be about 50 years old and was dressed in brown leather hiking boots, olive khakis, a sweatshirt, and a red coat. He was carrying a small backpack and did not seem to be dressed for boating or swimming.
Police believe the current probably carried the body downstream to the shallow portion of the river. They say he had not been in the water long.
While there were no signs of foul play, an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
