One more down: UofO wide receiver dismissed
EUGENE, Ore. – University of Oregon wide receiver Jamere Holland has been dismissed from the school’s football program for "a violation of team rules," said the football head coach Chip Kelly Sunday.
Officials won't say which rule this Ducks junior, who hailed from Pacoima, Calif., violated. However, the announcement comes after Holland put up at least two profanity-laced Facebook posts.
Holland's posts heatedly questioned what he said was the coach’s decision to suspend sophomore linebacker Kiko Alonso after Saturday morning’s DUII/MIP citations. The 19-year-old Alonso was pulled over at 2:19 a.m. Saturday morning at Fifth Avenue and East Broadway in downtown Eugene.
It also comes after Coach Chip Kelly announced Friday that the university was taking a hard look at reputation-damaging issues with its football squad. (Watch video from Friday's press conference.) On Sunday, University of Oregon President Richard Lariviere released the following statement:
"The University of Oregon has clear expectations of how its student athletes are to behave, both on and off the field of play. Lately, several of our athletes have fallen far short of these standards. This is simply unacceptable. The University of Oregon does not tolerate inappropriate conduct from any of its students. I know Athletics Director Mike Bellotti and Head Coach Chip Kelly share my concern about recent events involving UO players and are working hard to address these incidents. I have every confidence that they will restore the UO athletic program's long and proud tradition of sportsmanship and integrity. Our loyal fans and alumni expect no less, and neither do I."
Meanwhile, University of Oregon spokesman Dave Williford tells us Sunday afternoon that "despite the 'rumors,' Kiko Alonso’s status currently remains unchanged – he remains on the Oregon football roster."
As for Holland, Williford reports that the newly ousted player's two-season stats were "17 catches for 252 yards and two touchdowns" and "13 receptions for 199 yards and two touchdowns in 10 appearances in 2009." Holland did not play in the Rose Bowl because he was academically ineligible.
Williford joins four other Ducks football players – defensive lineman Terrance Montgomery, wide receiver Garrett Embry, kicker Mike Bowlin and defensive-end Matt Simms – off the University's football program since Dec. 1. Runningback LaMichael James also is barred from the university grounds until further notice.
