Robbery, chase and search ends with arrests

PORTLAND, Ore. - Three people were arrested Tuesday following a botched liquor store robbery, two-state police chase and an intense hunt for the suspects after they bailed out of a car and took off on foot.

The three who were arrested - 22-year-old Douglas Joseph Davis, 18-year-old Bry Lee Birdwell and 17-year-old Anthony Paul Lunetta - each face charges of first-degree robbery.

The chain of events began just after 2 p.m. when officers were called to the Stateline Liquor Store in the Jantzen Beach area on a report of an armed robbery.

The manager of the liquor store, John Ahern, said a man with a gun came in and ordered everybody to get on the floor.  There were about eight or nine customers in the store at the time, with no one behind the register.  The suspect then ran out of the store.

When police arrived, they started chasing what witnesses said was the getaway car - a black Honda Accord.  They followed the vehicle into Vancouver and then back into Portland as the car traveled south on Interstate 5.

"They came out of nowhere behind me," said driver Paula Elliott.  "They got over just before they hit me."

Oregon Department of Transportation cameras captured the speeding car as it exited onto Rosa Parks Way, came to a screeching halt down the road and several people jumped out and ran.

"I was inside and heard a bunch of squealing of tires," said neighbor Wendy Peyton.  "I came running out and saw three kids pop out of that car and run through my neighbor's gate and I heard some rustling around in the backyard."

Police immediately activated a special response team to start a block-by-block search for the three who were spotted bailing out of the car.  Roads were shut down and nearby residents were told to stay inside their homes.

"I looked out and saw lights on," said resident Roger Bagley.  "They told me to go back inside my house."

Just before 5 p.m., special response officers, with the assistance of K-9, found the three suspects in a backyard in the 6400 block of North Maryland Avenue and took them into custody.

After interviewing the suspects, police determined there were no others still on the run. By 9 p.m., detectives finished processing the area for evidence and cleared the scene.
