'Monster truck' smashes cars parked in Springfield
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- After 14 years driving his Ford Probe, Riley Grannan said his car had suffered the usual dings here and there, but nothing like the beating it took early Saturday morning beneath the "feet" of a "monster."
"I thought I would just see it into its geriatric years and it would ease itself into the great auto graveyard," Grannan said. "But oh no, it had a quick checkout here, I guess."
Grannan's Probe and other cars parked in a residental Springfield neighborhood were crushed under the wheels of a monster truck early Saturday morning, neighbors told KVAL News.
The damage happened about 4 a.m. Saturday morning. Grannan said he and his partner Denise were woken up by a loud engine, some revving, a "crunch" -- and the sound of broken glass.
"I'm a pretty good sleeper," Grannan said, "but that definitely got me going."
They went outside and found Grannan's car had been smooshed beneath tire marks on top of his car.
Witnesses said the person who did this was driving some sort of pickup that may have resembled a monster truck.
"It was very sinister looking," said Denise Fearn. "It didn't have its lights on. You couldn't see any chrome, you couldn't see any paint that was glossy. It was just creepy. There was something 'headless horseman' about it."
To get more information, KVAL News called Springfield police. Officers took a hit-and-run report at that location and a second one the same night just a few blocks away.
This leads Grannon and Fearn to believe this was no accident.
"That was not the act of somebody who missed their mark," he said.
Even though it's too late for for the old Probe, Grannan and Fearn hope whoever did this is caught so no other cars suffer the same fate.
"There are places you can go to tear things up but it shouldn't be kelly boulevard in Springfield," Grannan said. "This is probably somebody who is going to brag about this. You know, just help us out here."
