Police work in southeast Portland after a stabbing Sunday afternoon. One man died at the scene.

PORTLAND, Ore. - One man was killed Sunday after police say he tried to intervene in a fight between a man and a woman at a southeast Portland home.

Police taped off an entire block of homes along Southeast Rhone Street and Southeast 54th Avenue as they searched for a suspect and clues at the crime scene.

Dolores Kirschner, who has lived in the area for 40 years, says the man who was killed tried to come to the aid of a woman who was being assaulted by a Hispanic man.

The suspect reportedly stabbed the man in the neck. He died at the scene.

Another woman, Terri Young, who was smoking a cigarette nearby says she saw a man run past her shortly after the incident. Young says she expects she will be interviewed by police. She said the man she saw running appeared to be frightened.

Portland police spokesperson Cathe Kent said the death was "suspicious" but that police were waiting for an autopsy to be completed on Monday.

No suspect description or any information about the victim has been released.
