Group works to reveal names of petition signers
PORTLAND, Ore. - A group of gay rights supporters say they are fighting back against a petition drive aimed at reversing Oregon's new anti-discrimination and domestic partnership laws.
They're developing a website called knowthyneighbororegon.com.
They say they plan to expose people who sign the petition by making their names and addresses readily available on the Internet.
They say they're trying to protect rights they've worked years to achieve.
In other states, like Massachusetts and Florida, knowthyneighbor.com lists the names and addresses of people who've signed anti-gay rights legislation.
Brandon Berg is part of a group working to develop a similar site in Oregon.
"We are making people take responsibility for their actions," Berg said.
He said he is against petition organizer Marilyn Shannon's effort to reverse the legislature's passage of two gay rights bills recently signed by Governor Kulongoski.
Several people asked by KATU News said they were not comfortable with Berg's effort to reveal the names of petition signers.
