PORTLAND, Ore. – KATU's extended forecasts and computer models are projecting a warm weekend ahead. This could mean not only the Portland area's first 80-degree day of the year, but a day that could nearly hit 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

The temperature is predicted to be 83 degrees Fahrenheit on Saturday, and 88 degrees Fahrenheit on Sunday.

"This won't be a record high for the date," said KATU Meteorologist Dave Salesky, "but it will be the warmest temperature since Sept. 27, 2009, at 83 degrees."

That's nearly nine months of below-80-degree temperatures, ended by a double-whammy of two 80-degree-plus days in a row.

If temperatures stay below 80 degrees Wednesday, June 9 will have already broken the record for the longest stretch in Portland Airport history for temperatures to not rise about that 80-degree mark.

But don't think the water will be as warm, Salesky warns.

"The water will be cold," he said. For those jumping in, "it's going to be a shock to the system."

The currents in most Oregon and Southwest Washington rivers are still running rapidly – pushed by record levels of Northwest rain. Those getting into the water also could face overflow from sewer systems filled to the brim with rain water.

Even if you're just out for a boat ride, consider checking the Northwest River Forecast Center for flood levels. Marine patrol officers also are warning recreationalists to keep an eye on flowing water for dangerous debris, propelled by faster-than-usual currents.
