One killed, one injured in shooting incident

Police work in a taped off area on North Mississippi Street on Sunday after a shooting incident that left one person dead and another injured.

PORTLAND, Ore. - One man was killed and another man was injured in a double shooting in northeast Portland Sunday morning.

Police identified the man killed as 30-year-old Alonzo Grey of Portland, his photo is below.

The other man shot was a 36-year-old male, David Stephens. He was taken to Legacy Emanuel Hospital for treatment of injuries that police called non-life threatening.

Stephens is also locally known as rapper Maniac Loc.

According to Sgt. Brian Schmautz, a Portland police spokesman, officers responded to the 4500 block of North Albina Avenue about 6:15 a.m. after receiving a report of someone firing gunshots.

Once there, they found Stephens suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and took him to the hospital in a patrol car.

While they were checking the area for a suspect, they found Grey's body on the ground in the 4500 block of North Mississippi Avenue - about a block away from where they had found Stephens.

Officers eventually connected both incidents to a home in the 4500 block of North Mississippi Avenue, where someone had called 911 immediately after the shooting, Schmautz said.

When police called into the home, they contacted a suspect who surrendered without a struggle sometime after 7 a.m.

Police detained the suspect, identified as Joshua Banks-Hankins, 21.

"We don't know with certainty how this all happened yet," Schmautz said, adding that it was unclear whether there was an exchange of gunfire or there was a lone shooter. They do believe the shooting happened near the North Mississippi Avenue house.

Police taped off several blocks of the neighborhood Sunday to process the crime scene.

Nearly a dozen people that were in the house with the suspect were also questioned.

Schmautz said it was not clear whether Banks-Hankins ran into the home at random or had some connection with the people inside.
