Man treated for hypothermia after sailboat beaches in Newport
NEWPORT, Ore. - A 77-year-old man is in the hospital after his 38-foot sailboat drifted overnight into the surf and ended up stuck on a beach in Newport.
According to the Oregon State Police, a report came in around 8 a.m. Friday that a sailboat was on the shore near Northwest 68th Street.
When rescuers arrived on scene they found a 77-year-old man, the sailboat's owner, on the beach. The man told them he was sailing along the Oregon coast, went to sleep and woke up to find his boat on its side. He was able to get himself out.
The man, who has not been identified, lives on the sailboat by himself. He was transported to a Newport-area hospital to be treated for hypothermia.
The Oregon State Parks & Recreation Department will be working with the sailboat's owner to remove it from the beach.
