PORTLAND, Ore. – A bicyclist was hit by an Amtrak train Sunday, A Portland Fire and Rescue spokesman said.
The collision happened near NW Front Avenue and 17th at around 12:30 p.m.
The bicyclist has not been identified. He was taken to a Portland hospital.
An Amtrak spokesperson said the train was a passenger train heading to Seattle. The train stopped after the collision and was delayed for nearly two hours.
No one on the train was hurt.
You know them darn trains.....I have yet to see one with a "Share thr tracks" sticker. SAM!!!!!!
How do you not see or hear a train????
STUPID, STUPID, STUPID PEOPLE!!! Just exactly when will people learn that they cannot win against a train?
Must have been the trains fault.
Â
This was obviously one of those "right turn hook" things when someone cuts the cyclist off.
Â
Everyone knows youâre supposed to give a cyclist at least three feet, this train was in violation.
Â
The train must have gone over the green box and then hit the cyclist.
Â
I bet the train ran a red light. Everyone knows how they never pay attention to lights and never get ticketed.
Â
I bet the cyclist was at a marked crosswalk and the train just refused to stop.
Â
I could go on and on.
Â
The headline of this article "Bicyclist hit by Amtrak train" can only be accurate if the cyclist was crossing the tracks prior the the train arriving and the train hit the side of the bicycle. If the collision involved the side of the train (find out, KATU) the headline should read "Train hit by bicyclist:. It can be misleading.
It will be interesting if there is more information coming, to tell how a bicyclist got hit by a train. Did they hit something in the road that made them swerve? Were their brakes faulty and not allow them to stop quickly enough. I have had that happened, and put new brakes on bicycle. Were they listening to loud music with earbuds crammed in both ears? I see drivers, riders and pedestrians with those crammed in their ears, and no attention being paid to what is going on around them. They are too busy changing music or messing with them.
Â
Hopefuly the rider will recover from this and learn from it. Hopefully the news will tell exactly what happened, what led to the occurence.
Â
Another reason why mixing bicycles with anything but a track (bike track) is dangerous
well the commentary certainly was expected.
Sorry, but there is no way you can get hit by a big train while bicycling unless you are (a) suicidal, (b) dead drunk. or (c) plain stupid, Â Good luck!
Bike rider should get Community Service, 2 hours for every person delayed on the train.
well Gosh! Everyone knows that trains go off the tracks & chase bicycles!
Darwin Honorary Mention.... how loud must those headphones be not to hear (feel) a train coming.
Shame on you, Portland, are you guys trying to beat Cowlitz County for the most idiots to get hit by trains?
Another arrogant cyclist bites the dust.....too bad, soo sad. Â Maybe if they used a little common sense and courtesy this kind of thing would not happen.
@LakeOSteve Compared to drivers or pedestrians, how many cyclists have been hit by trains? Or are you saying drivers and pedestrians are arrogant? I just love how people can say noting good about anyone on a bicycle.
Not all cyclists are morons. I would say about 10-15% of them are, and those selfish idiots ruin it for everyone.
@LakeOSteve You'd have better luck winning the lottery than asking cyclists to possess common sense.. or at least use it.
As little sympathy as it shows me having, this could been avoided by not being negligent.
Anyone dumb enough to get hit by a train deserves what they get!
I've ridden trains in and out of Portland. In the area where the collision occurred those trains are barely moving. How did this happen?
I wonder what was going through this guys head besides the train?
I think that Portland Police should pull there traffic cops off of I-5 and I-205 and simply focus there attention at as many stop signs as they can. They can right as many failure to stop tickets to bicyclist all day long. If they did that for a week they would generate so much revenue, the city wouldn't have to worry about school closures.
If he was crossing the tracks on 17th, he had to go around the crossing gates in order to collide with the train. Â You can't fix stupid.
I see cyclists running through stop signs and stop lights every morning and evening when I walk across the bridge to go to work. Â It's very rare I see cars do that. Â Last week a cyclist blew through a stop sign and came close to hitting a pedestrian in the crosswalk. Â Luckily the one step the pedestrian took off of the sidewalk into the crosswalk was an easy fix to step back on the sidewalk. Â It will be nice when Adams gets out of office..then all of these special rights the cyclists are getting and police turning a blind eye will hopefully go away!
@BayouBoy "then all of these special rights the cyclists are getting "
What special rights are the cyclist getting?
Â
"and police turning a blind eye"
Can you show proof of a cop who saw a bike break the law and said "I'm just turning a bind eye to that because they are on a bike"
Â
You sound like a bitter walker who does not want to share the sidewalk.....
Â
@B Smizzle  @BayouBoy Well there is the problem right there B smizzel bikes are not supposed to be on the side walks more proof of another dumb cyclist comment.
@B Smizzle I've seen it myself.  Last week there were cops on bikes themselves downtown near the Koin tower.  Another cyclist was going the wrong way on the one way street ... the same street the cops were on. The cops  did nothing!
@B Smizzle  @BayouBoy Um..in most cities cyclists aren't supposed to be on the sidewalks anyway Is this some special pass they get in Portland? At least this will give that unwashed, clueless rabble that roams downtown on the weekends something else to protest.
yep, that train pulled right out and hit that bicyclist.
It looks like the comment circus is up to it's usual standard on the boards today.  Them damn cyclists, you never hear of cars getting hit by trains.  Except for the 5,800 vehicle train crashes each year in the United States recorded by the USDOT.  But hey that's only 15 a day, we can't let that get in the way of good whining session about how this is the mayor of Portland's fault.Â
@Focus 503 I'd be willing to bet there are at least 5,800 times more cars crossing railroad tracks than bicycles. What's your point?
@Focus 503 How many bikes get hit by cars?
Well shoot, they think they're invincible when they're weaving in and out of traffic with cars, so why not do the same with a train? Oh wait, trains can't "weave" out of the way like a car can!
Now all of the bicycle / cyclists organizations will blame AMTRAK for not giving the bicyclist the right-of-way. After all, the bicycle / cyclists organizations rule Portland and beyond. They can do no wrong. They are above the law and the rules of the roadway.
Why don't they give it the PROPER headline??? Amtrak train hit by bicyclist.
I suppose the invincible bicyclist refused to move out of the way? Obviously it's the train's fault! Shuuuuure!
Wouldn't want to ask the cyclists to turn their head just a little bit. I'm sure the train should have slammed on the breaks and stopped about a mile down the tracks all for the benefit of the self-righteous cyclists that are about all lows & common sense. I mean, the cyclist had to have know s/he was cross tracks.. gee I guess it would be too much turn your head and look.
It wouldn't surprise me if Emperess Adams outlaws trains after this.
Yup! I can see it now: "Train Free Zones"!Â
@jpk ~  For sure..!  Can't you just see the signs?  Big red circle with a little black silhouette of a train in it, and that red diagonal stripe across the train?   :-)
Probably part of Chain reaction and thought he'd bully the train.
The engine is advertizing King Tut's mummy. It's cursed.
 @PDXBEAR precisely what I thought
Tell me cyclists are careful....blame everyone else when they get hit. How do you miss a train?!?????
Pretty easy to NOT get hit by a train during daytime.... oh.... and sober.... Just sayin...
@justanopionion ~  And maybe leave the headphones at home, so you can actually hear things going on around you, like train horns??? Â
Why bother reporting without info ?
Those trains need to learn how to share the tracks! Let's build a painted box for them, that'll fix everything!
Â
Good luck with the healing bicyclist person... next time try to avoid the trains.
Â
Maybe the train swerved into the bike lane, maybe.
@swimbad ~  Yep... you really have to watch out for those darn trains... they just swerve around all over the place, change lanes without signaling...  Sheesh..!  Â
