GRESHAM, Ore. – Even Gresham Police officers are calling a recent burglary "bold" and “very unusual.”
The victim is calling it “a slap in the face” above and beyond just losing his possessions.
Rusty Hoyle of Gresham said he returned from a week’s vacation in May to find his apartment had been burglarized. "When I walked in the door, it was just like, 'where's all my stuff?' Hoyle recalled.
The burglars took the usual items – a flat-screen TV and stereo equipment – but it’s what else they did and took that has Hoyle saying he feels violated.
Hoyle said the burglars literally cleaned him out, taking all his clothes, including things like socks and underwear.
"Everything's gone," Hoyle said.
He said they also drank his liquor and took all of his food out of the refrigerator and freezer – after they apparently cooked a meal for themselves on the stove. They left a big mess and the dirty dishes behind, he said.
They even took his toothbrush.
About $4,000 worth of property was taken, police said. Hoyle got emotional about the burglary, saying the apartment he had set up just one month ago “is the biggest accomplishment since my divorce 10 years ago.”
The suspects also took some paychecks and somebody cashed one. Gresham Police are looking into whether anyone was caught on camera cashing the check.
Hoyle has since moved out of the apartment and said he doesn’t know if he will ever get the stolen items back again.
“It takes someone with no conscience to come in and do something like this,” he said.
Gresham Police continue to investigate the burglary.
