Couple takes up cake offer from celebrity baker Duff Goldman

PORTLAND, Ore. – The lesbian couple who was denied a wedding cake at Gresham bakery has taken up the offer from a celebrity baker to make them an alternate cake.
Duff Goldman from the TV show “Ace of Cakes” heard about the story last week and decided to offer up his services free of charge to the couple.
“I saw this story and I thought, ‘Hey, I can do something,’” Goldman told the Huffington Post when he made the offer. “I will make the cake for free, drive it up to Portland just to right this wrong.”
The couple put out a statement through their lawyer on Friday afternoon.
“We are grateful for the outpouring of support we have received from friends, family, members of the LGBT community, and our allies,” they said. The couple has declined to publicize their names. “We are especially thankful that LGBT-supportive companies have graciously offered their services to make our special day perfect.”
The two women had already ordered one cake from another local bakery. Not wanting to break that contract, they will serve Goldman’s cake in addition to a cake from Pastrygirl.
Sweet Cakes by Melissa, the bakery that originally declined to bake a cake for a same-sex wedding, is under investigation by the state to see if they broke an Oregon anti-discrimination law.
The bakery’s owner, Aaron Klein, told KATU that he wouldn’t make a cake for a same-sex couple because of his religious beliefs.
Screw these white trash bakers.
The owner of the Swet Cakes keeps saying it is a religous thing, but being gay is a sexual orientation not a religion. He has sold cakes to them before and as a small business owner I would not say no to a customer that buys from me. And KUDOS!!!!! to Ace of Cakes, Duff Goldman. Way to go. And good luck to the couple. I wish you all the best.
So if I went into a Halal meat shop and demanded that they make me pork sausage of something non-Halal do they have the right to refuse? Why, because it's a Muslim thing and the white liberal guilt doctrine says "hands off" for them?Â
If these cake shop people were to simply change their name to, "Christian Principle Bakery" would that afford them the right to refuse to bake for gay weddings? Maybe, maybe not.
Personally I don't care one way or the other. But if the business only wants to do business a certain way then they need to operate as a private buying club and issue membership cards. If they care that much about their doctrine then they can solicit their memberships at the mega churches in the area. Otherwise, if you open your door to the public it becomes a slippery slope. "No shirt, no shoes, no service" came about from lawyers and insurance companies as well as "the right to refuse service to anyone for any reason". '
Hey I refuse the right for anyone to snarkily reply to my post. Hmmph!
 @Mr. Carbon Footprint Well since Muslims don't eat pork for religious reasons a Halal store wouldn't carry it therefore they wouldn't refuse to make you some, they would just say they don't carry it.  Maybe that would be discriminating against pork but not a person. lolÂ
 @Mr. Carbon Footprint I apologize for the previous comment left here; I misread your post.

Lol. I do that too. No worries.
What would Allah do, I wonder, ina situation like this?
 @jpkMr. AquaDinnerJacket said that in Iran there were no gays. Sounds like a tolerant place, just like Saudi Arabia. Kumbaya.
@Mr. Carbon Footprint Believe me - christians would LOVE to do the same thing here if they could. This is the perfect example of it. American evangelicals certainly started the proces in Nigeria... since they are losing ground here. Flying all that way just to get passed a "murder the gays" bill.
@Mr. Carbon Footprint @Gayman " I lived down South for a number of years. I eventually left because I had too much trouble fitting in. It was a cultural clash. However I didn't insist that all of the Southerners bow to my demands and expectations." Tell me where are we to go? You could just move to another town.
AID's HIV is NOT gay issue, it is and equal opportunity problem that can affect a young child or an old person.
Â
AIDS kills Christians both gay and straight without regards to one beliefs or sexual orientation
@Mr. Carbon Footprint Looks like we have a difference of opinion. A "culture clash" is different than being physically beatn up or killed. How lovely for you that you do not have to deal with that. You should be thankful.
Â
I have never been to the south of the US. I will never travel there. I know where I am not wanted. Yet - christians can walk in gay neighborhoods without a problem. Interesting - eh?
Â
My point is, you do not read about christians being killed, beaten, abused, or anything due to their religious beliefs. Gays on the other hand - yes - mainly due to "religious beliefs" of the abuser.
Â
We have made some progress over the years and I am quite greateful for that. Then you read an article like this where a christian decides to discriminate against a gay person for no other reason. Again - my point - we are not talking about the christian being discriminated against by a public business.
Â
I am not insisting people bow to my demands or expectations. Simply treat me as a human being. If I walked into a christian business, I would treat them with respect like any other business I walked into. I do, however, expect to be treated in return just like any other customer. I would not expect to attempt to buy something, and then upon the owner asking a few questions and finding out I was gay, promptly tell me that he could not sell to me due to his "religious beliefs".
Â
I do not think that those are excessive expectations or demands. Treat me decently and I will do the same. Single me out as gay and discriminate and yes - we have a problem here - especially in a public business.
 @Gayman Nobody is syaing that there aren't lousy people out there. People get rightfully charged with hate crimes every day. If a Christian laughs at someone dying of AIDS then they probably aren't Christians. Just off the wall zealots. Hmmm... are zealots of any kind really any different from each other?  At least in this country you have the right to stand on a soap box and scream your zealot message. I don't care for gays or Christians walking down the street flaunting their specialness over everyone. They lose any care I might have had at that moment.Â
I particuliarly don't care for gay drama much like I don't care for people knocking on my door trying to 'save me". Same difference. Same drama.
While I appreciate your challenges growing up, you can't say that things have gotten worse in this country for gays. I'm from the North East. I lived down South for a number of years. I eventually left because I had too much trouble fitting in. It was a cultural clash. However I didn't insist that all of the Southerners bow to my demands and expectations.Â
Cry me a river.Â
Â
Â
Â
@Mr. Carbon Footprint Are you gay? Have you faced what we have at the hands of christians in this country? I doubt it, but I have faced it all my life and continue to on a daily basis. It must be nice to brush aside your hand at the matter and treat it as if it is nothing.
Â
Tell that to the gays that died from AIDS which the christians laughed and danced on TV rejoicing at their gay children dying from the disease. I know - you will just call that more drama because you did not have to live through that. I did - in my teenage years. I lost many friends to AIDs and spent my high school years attending funerals.
Â
Tell me - how many christians are bullied? Are christian teens commiting suicide? How many are spit upon? How many are told almost daily that they are sinners and going to hell? How many are physically beat up for their beliefs? How many are used in the presidential debates as doormats to whip up the evangelical votes through debasement on national TV? Having their views being compared to pedophiles and beastiality?
Â
How many christians are having laws passed and portions added to state constitutions about them to restrict their American rights?
Â
I agree - the drama is getting a little old. Would you please tell the christians to stop with their bigotry already? It IS wearing a little thin and I have spent a lifetime having to deal with their intolerant and discriminatory views.
 @Gayman I know a lot of Christians. Most of them don't approve of the gay lifestyle but they wouldn't turn them away if they were hungry, or not hire them, etc.Â
There are radical elements in every group. To constantly single out Christians constantly as your only enemy is short sighted. If anything, the gay lifestyle in this country has advanced and grown tremndously. It sure hasn't declined over the last several decades.Â
Stop playing the victim already, it's getting old. Where is the concern for the gays who are persecuted and murdered in less tolerant places around the world? If you are concerned about the mega churches going out and spreading their faith in places like Nigeria, et al then why isn't the gay community doing the same thing?
The only obstacle I can see here for gays is their own drama. When you can have HUGE populations of gays in major cities across America then I don't see why you think that you have to hang on to every little incident.Â
Â
More drama...meh.
@jpk In Islam it is taught that you must show hospitality to a stranger... It is the same in Judiasm and Christianity. Most religions of the world teach being hospitable to strangers.
Â
I wonder why it failed here?
 @Gayman  @jpk Stranger: Someone you never met before. You know nothing about them until they decide to "unload" on you. Opinions are then formed.
Nothing failed here. We get it, you don't like Christians. I don't profess to be one but I don't put them all in the same category just like some gays wear a suit and tie to work and are just 3rd guy, 3rd row. Some gays walk around and can't keep the drama to themselves. Same thing with Christians. Look in the mirror.
As it should be!
Â
You must be a GREAT dad.
I have looked in the mirror many times. The first time when my adopted son transgendered to a female, and then again when my only bio son informed me he was gay. When I look in the mirror, I still see myself and the love I had for both of my children!
âI saw this story and I thought, âHey, I can do something,ââ Goldman told the Huffington Post when he made the offer. âI will make the cake for free, drive it up to Portland just to right this wrong.âÂ
More like I can get some free air time outa this!
 @oodathunkedÂ
Yeah, Aaron Klein's two appearances on the Lars Larson Show in the past 30 or so days was kind of a tell. Â How much you want to bet the Kleins were the ones who tipped off the media about this story? Â How much you want to bet that Lars Larson put them up to this?
Â
Remove the plank from thine own eye.
 @Diogenes  @oodathunked I didn't know he was on twice, but I listened to the interview from 2/1 -- right up until Lars tried to drag in Obamacare somehow (dry heaves prevented me from listening beyond that point.  dry heaves and the molten lava I poured in to each ear canal)....must've done that early(ish) that day, because the story broke on KATU around 3pm....he wouldn't have gone on Lars THAT day if the plan wasn't to be the first one out there with the story.  Playing offensive instead of defensive -- good ploy until it backfires. Â
 @oodathunked So did Sweet Cakes . . . . . .Â
Today on the news, Saturday, it was said there will be a protest in front of the store. There needs to signs protesting the protestors discrimination against the store owners religious beliefs. I wonder if that could be a suit. Need to set a presidence if not.
 @Jan Qwib It's 'precedence'... and please learn how to write simple sentences in your own native English before you express yourself in a public forum. You are embarrassing yourself.Â
 @Jan Qwib I agree, Jan. The owners of Sweet Cakes are being harassed by a certain community that does not share their views. I don't see the big deal here, except someone wanted to make a problem where there wasn't one. As for Sweet Cakes, it is THEIR place of business and they should be able to do what they want. I wouldn't want someone making my wedding cake that wasn't happy for me; I'd find someone that would and NOT make a big stink about it. These people are being abused and harassed. The homosexual community isn't the only ones who have rights.
 @Jan Qwib freedom to protest....LOL...you think you can bring suit against protesters in a legal protest due to religious beliefs?  Why don't you read up on our nations laws and then sit in a corner quietly for the rest of your life
 @Jan Qwib There also needs to be signs protesting the protesters of the protesters.
 @JTesla  @Jan Qwib Only in America. Â
 @Somonecaresaboutsomething  @JTesla  @Jan Qwib Only in *Portland* :)
 @Jan QwibÂ
So, you're of a mind that people exercising their right to freedom of speech and of peaceable assembly is actionable? Â I love that the people on the other side of this debate can be picked out by their pig ignorant positions on pretty much every single part of American life. Â It makes the gleaning so much easier.
 @Jan Qwib Please review your Constitution - Amendment One.
What a waste of time.....all about a stupid cake. Â Hate runs wild with those who support same sex marriage.
 @sortbait hate runs  wild under the cloak of "religion" of which is a belief....lets see...how many people of dies in religious wars over the millennia?  Hate is something religion does every time it condemns and excludes based on "faith" then turns tail and tries to hide  its self behind a book....
hate is what you wrote above.
hate is when you follow little bits here and there of your faith and then expect others to follow all of it
IE the cake shop owners profit off of  gluttons and we all know gluttony is a deadly sin...and yet it's OK to make profit off of it?  that's hate
 @hotrods arefun comment doesnt make any sense....pure fantasy.
@sortbait Aaron was the aggressor... the christian. And you want to blame the gays for standing up for their rights. I know, I know... the bully gets angry when the victim stands up and points out our civil laws.
I drive by this place a couple times a day. The parking lot is never full, maybe 4 or 5 cars parked in front of this place which is in a strip mall and those cars could easily be doing business anywhere, and never have I seen any lines going out the door. Is somebody lying?
 @tigress Who cares?
 @Mike  @tigressÂ
Well, since the Klein's sins keep piling up, we want to know if we should add bearing false witness. Â We already have marking and cutting the skin, rounding the head, gossiping, judging others, failing to render unto Ceasar that which is Ceasar's, and praying in public. Â I'm willing to bet we would also find that they've mixed wool and linen fibers, eaten meat and dairy in a single meal, broken the Sabbath, and I'd bet Aaron Klein has touched his wife during her period. Â So I think they should be stoned. Â That's the punishment for those who don't follow the laws, and the Kleins are pretty adamant that they want to be held to Biblical law.
 @JTesla  @Diogenes dont forget provide cakes to gluttons and profit off of gluttony....why it's only, only a deadly sin they're pandering to for profit
@Diogenes @Mike @tigress Well - sadly for the Kleins, the "stoned" they might be looking for is only legal in WA. Since you will not bake a cake, no weed for you!
 @Diogenes Add encouraging the sin of adultery by providing cakes to divorcees who remarry.
 @Mike You cared enought to hit "Reply".
There is no such thing as "the right to refuse service" when state law forbids doing so. He broke the law, no matter how hard they try to spin.
 @MarcoD That is the whole point of this story and has been from the beginning. Everyone else has caused it to be blown out of proportion and decided to start name calling and belittling. EVERYONE has the right to have their own beliefs, not just this bakery! But you are right MarcoD, he broke a law.
 @MarcoD The state refuses to grant the wedding license. Which is the greater offense in your mind?
@Mike What you are also refusing to acknowledge is that the reason for the refusal was "against my religious beliefs". That in itself is fine - if it were carried across the board. As in - ALL of his religious beliefs. This would mean that in order to be consistent, he would need to ask his clients questions regarding their weddings. Like - is this your second or third marriage? Is the woman a virgin? These two statements are in line with his religious beliefs - christianity. But you and I know full well that he never asks these questions of heterosexual couples. Only when he asked the names of the bride and groom did he find out that the couple was indeed lesbian, and not heterosexual. This is when he refused to make the cake.
Â
This entire argument is a charade. Christians are asking that they be given the right to refuse LGBT clients based on their "religious beliefs". This is the only reason for the refusal. One demographic out of all he serves in his public shop is discriminated against.
Â
Make no mistake - the christians here are the aggressors. Of all of the sins out in the world, they focus on gays to punish and persecute. Period. People that support this business want to see this discrimination carried through so that it is perfectly legal to use the "religious belief" argument for any public accomodation to target the LGBT demographic.
Â
This is why we have non-discrimination laws. So that no tax paying American citizen should be turned away from a public business. Christians are fighting for the right to turn gays away from their public facing businesses.
 @Mike  @Gayman legally speaking you do have to provide services across the board lest ye feel the sting of the law.  that thing that protects us from discrimination mike..the law ...the thing this  rube broke and also thumbed his nose at....the law
@Mike Let me ask you - if you came into my cake shop and asked me to make a cake for your church with a big cross on it - could I refuse you due to MY "religious beliefs"?
@Mike See - this is where the issue is. He DID ask questions which led to the refusal. He asked the names of the bride and groom. THAT is how he found out it was a cake for two women.
 @Gayman This is not about refusing the homosexual clients. It has to do with what kind of cake they were asked to make. I don't care what you do in the privacy of your home -- that's between you and God. And if you want to come to my shop and ask for a Valentine's Day cake, I'm going to make it -- no questions asked. Just don't make me be part of your coming out. I have no interest in being a part of it, and you shouldn't be able to force others to do so,either.
 @Mike  @MarcoDÂ
That's called "deflection." Â When you can't refute the substance of someone else's argument, try to change the subject. Â
 @Mike  @Diogenes  @MarcoD He makes cakes "for all occasions".
 @Mike  @Diogenes  @MarcoD Oh god, still trying to post what's been refuted already?  Show me the law that says you have to have a marriage license to have a wedding cake.
Are you gonna also say a mechanic can't fix my car if I don't have a license?
 @Diogenes  @Mike  @MarcoD I thought that was a Saul Alinsky tactic....
 @Mike  @Diogenes  @MarcoD LOL...mike says it's true i did it...and then spews out more filth to further go off topic with and I quote "I do not believe" which roots right back to if you don't believe what I do.....LOL
 @Mike  @Diogenes  @MarcoD Nice Mike...well lets get the colored only drinking fountains out and  since your neighbors are Muslims, I hope you enjoy Sharia law.....
You're ridiculous.  Our laws were set up to protect us from religion...yes, you have the freedom to follow your faith but you can't force it upon others...see also why this country was populated to begin with
 @Diogenes  @MarcoD You leftists want it to be about bigotry. I don't see it that way. Even if Klein is bigoted toward homosexuals, this is about someone coming and demanding a service he doesn't provide without violating his conscience. The red hering in this hole thing is the homosexual couple, who undoubtedly targeted this little shop because they knew they were Christians. If it were me, and the state PC Gestapo forced me to provide such a service, I'd shut it down, go online and only provide the kinds of cakes I can make with a clear conscience.
 @Mike  @MarcoDÂ
Same sex marriage is legal in Washington. Â If he makes any cakes for any couples who are being married in Washington, he can't refuse same sex couples who are being married in Washington. Â The only way he could refuse to make a cake for a same sex couple who are being married in Washington is if he refuses to make cakes for ANYONE who is being married in Washington. Â But he didn't. Â Because the marriage law argument is a red herring. Â This wasn't about legality, this was bigotry, plain and simple. Â And you know it.
 @Diogenes  @MarcoD It is true, I did deflect in this instance. However, I believe I can also refute the premise. I do not believe the state can force a kind of service, only demand that services are not denied on the basis of one's personal homosexual tendencies. So if the homosexually oriented individual comes into my shop and asks for a cake, I make it. If a homosexual pedophile comes into my shop and asks for a cake, I make it. But if he wants a cake for his marriage to a 15-year-old boy, I don't make it, because that isn't legal. And If he wants a cake for his marriage to another man, I don't make it-- because that isn't legal, either.
