Finding the facts behind the new ads by casino opponents

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A new poll conducted exclusively for KATU News showed that many Oregon voters don't feel like gambling on The Grange, a casino east of Portland.
The KATU poll, conducted this week by Survey USA, finds 43 percent of voters plan to vote against Measure 82, which would amend the state constitution to allow privately-owned casinos.
A total of 27 percent of people said they will support Measure 82 and 31 percent remain undecided less than two months before election day.
On Measure 83, which would allow the privately-owned casino in Wood Village, 39 percent of voters said they will vote against the measure while 28 percent are in support of building the new casino. A total of 33 percent of voters are undecided.
These poll results come as Measure 82 and 83 opponents today launched their first campaign ad slamming The Grange casino and its backers.
The opponents, who are funded by Indian tribes with their own casinos, said supporters of The Grange are misleading Oregonians by talking about everything except casinos in order to sell them on building a casino. Now these opponents are spending $100,000 on television ads that question their integrity.
Again, WOW! It would be nice if some of you would not act like a jackass pinata waiting to get the candy slapped out of it.
Please stop with the hispanic slander about illegals taking the low paying jobs. I have worked with several hispanic individuals and have hispanic neighbors that work hard, are here legally, and keep their homes immaculate. If you employ or screen for jobs you will find that many people turn down lower paying jobs because unemployment or assistance pays more: hence. members of the hispanic community come here on legal VISAs to work. So in reality we are just giving them the jobs.
All of the comments made about gambling are true and can be substantiated through press releases or just taking the time to visit a casino. Casinos cannot forbid people from gambling regardless of mental capacity or any other factor except illegal activity. The investigation by the state into spending state money at casinos or on the lottery was an article in the Oregon papers and on KATU and KOIN 6. The state was researching the state debit cards given to people on unemployment, tax refunds, or other assistance programs. Someone complained or notice the charges.
Finally, the new ad by the opponents of the Grange is just another publicity spin. They are claiming that Measure 82 and 83 are approval for only one casino. The spin is that the two measures together are for one casino but individually this is untrue. Measure 82 grants private investors the right to own and operate casinos in the state of Oregon. That means anyone can open a casino if they sponsor and the voters grant a casino operation in an incorporated city of Oregon within 60 miles of a Trbal Casino built by January 1, 2011. Measure 83 is the approval of the Grange and the distributions associated with this particular casino. 83 does not guarantee any union or a specific number of jobs, that health care will be paid by the employer, or any other claims that are made by the Grange ads.Â
@Pauletta  Just some clarification on the wording on the first line of your last paragraph :
"Finally, the new ad by the opponents of the Grange is just another publicity spin."
Is that supposed to "opponents" or "proponent". Were the grange people making this claim or were he people against the measures making the claim? Just wanted to be sure that I under stood what you wrote.
Sorry didn't get the change before it was posted. It was the proponents in the Grange's new ad that aired this week. Their new ad has dropped the dollar amount to be paid to the state and is advertising the 25% of revenue will be paid to the state. Not adjusted gross revenue but just revenue. It is all how you spin it!Â
The only miscommunication from the opponent was made by their spokes person in a news conference regarding the size of the casino. According to the building plans the Clairvest group has proposed this will be the largest casino floor in the Northwest area. However, the Measure will allow for a larger casino floor than is proposed. If the measure passes the Clairvest Group could opt for a larger or expanded casino floor area by submitting and receiving approval of new building plans from the City of Wood Village.
@Pauletta Thank you for the clarification. I was thinking along those lines but I wanted to make sure. Let's just hope that the GREATER people of Oregon see this for what it is and DON'T fall for the granges glittery hype. I would like to see it go down by even more than the 2/3 it went down last time. . . What say we put out a 3/4 "NO" vote this time Oregon?!!!!!! Send that clear message that NO MEANS NO!!!!
Lorie said it all ! Now can you come to the Salem on the 28th to meet up and be apart of Gamblers Awareness Day ? We have a Proclamation from the Governor making that day a state Awareness Day. This is all on the State Capitol steps at 1 PM on the 28th there will be other speekers ,like Les Bernel from a Nation group . This was all put together by Ronda Hatefi. ogao.ronda@gmail.com
It seems that everybody who thinks that this grange is a good idea is accepting all of the promises of all the money and jobs and financial overflow as an absolute a 100% guarantee, that is written in stone. How many times have we been promised over and over and over that this deal, or that deal, is going to bring us prosperity and riches and solve ALL our our problems? And where are we now? That's right. . . Schools are closing, teachers are being laid off, people are struggling to makes ends meet, communities and neighborhoods in disrepair. . . . .Yep, that's really worked out for us, hasn't it. Just the same old promises with the same disappointing results. None of that money ever goes where it is supposed to. It never does. It will be: "Here is your door prize and thanks for playing along." I guess the real question is just how many times are we going to believe these promises and get kicked in the stomach before we say "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!?? And what about the agreement in the State Constitution that was made with our American Native communities? They rely on the income of their casinos to support their families and build up their communities? Are we going to break, yet, ANOTHER promise to them or does the buck stop here?  How about it Oregon. . . . are you ready to be made a fool of ONE more time? OR HAVE YOU ALL HAD ENOUGH? I think it's time that we let everyone know what it means to REALLY keep a promise. I encourage you all to Vote NO and don't fall for the empty hype.
@Lorie Buchanan  You said it all just as things go !

@Lorie Buchanan Lorie, You wouldn't happen to be a paid opponent who hits forums and social websites spreading the information? Funny how you have a new account (today) and only have commented here....
Â
I am not for the casino ....I will state that right now ....As much as I dont like seeing people becoming gambling addicts I dont also like seeing the state becoming addicts to taxes and revenue from these type of actviities.....sin taxes....
Â
This state with the advent of video poker and lottery as become addicted to the money to sustain government. They need more and more of us to keep funding it, eventhough they have already spent the money projected to be collected for a decade out....
Â
THE OTHER THING THAT SICKENS ME!!!!
Â
INDIAN CASINOS!!!!
Â
What kind of nerve do they have....They have a dog in the fight and to see them bankroll the opposition is hypocritical at best....This is about cutting into their bottomline than about them actually caring for citizens of Oregon
@Duvie23@Lorie
A paid opponent??? Someone actually does that? That is way too much time in front of a computer. I would NEVER have the patience for that.  Â
Nope, I stumbled onto this site while surfing KATUÂ for presidential election news
(now THERE'S some comic relief for you) When I realized what this site was, and being of the mind that this whole casino thing is a HORRIBLE idea, I just threw my 2 cents in with everyone else. Not sure what gave you the impression that I was a "paid opponent."  Sorry to disappoint you. Not my kind of gig. And you might want to check the time that I actually submitted that post. Because you made the comment: "Funny how you have a new account (TODAY) and only have commented here"  Â
And if you check the time stamp on my post you will see that my submission was a day before yours. . . not the same day.    ?????
Why is no one questioning that 2 people and ONLY 2 people in the state of oregon, Bruce Studer and Matthew Rossman, will be allowed a casino in this state constitutional ammendment ?? Measure 83 does exactly that !!The constiution was not ment for choosing a few indivuduals and proclaining them "winners" !
Why am I not suprised to hear that the company / owners are tied to the mob and involved with corruption???
@cptmac11 You should give us the reputable source, news article or court case that proves this....not just your rants and your crazy concoctions...
Â
If you cannot you should be banned. What you are doing is libel.

@Lorie Buchanan @cptmac11 Because it is not true...Can not find any mention or any article about that....
Â
cptmac11 is a troll and often spreads misinformation......
@Duvie23 Your are absolutely right. Can't make accusations like that with out the proof and should never accept accusations like that without seeing the evidence first. So until I see real evidence, it's only rumor.
My favorite comment "Casinos do not make gambling addictions." This statement is correct in the sense of the casino but cannot be accurate when referring to the makers of slot machines. Fact is that one of the largest slot machine makers hires psychologists to study gamblers reactions to design slot machines that will captivate and retain a player for longer periods of time . The information analyzes screen colors that are pleasing, popular styles of machines, and features like video game style machines that allow bets at faster paces. The most popular style was the "dribbler" a machine that gives the player small wins and an allusion the player is being rewarded for their playing when in reallity they are losing at a faster pace. Dribblers are usually under a game show feature like Wheel of Fortune, Deal or No Deal, or some other movie/TV show that is popular. Another big device is the multiple lines feature that are found on penny machines because the player will actually forget they are spending $2 when they bet. How could they spend $1,000 on a penny machine, right? In the same article the reporter asked the executive if he gambled and his reply was "No, gambling is for losers!" Sound familiar. This man has a job and makes millions so what if his craft hurts others it doesn't impact his life. Or does it, when his credit card, house or car get stolen to pay off a debt?Â
This article was an insert in the first gambling packets handed to compulsive gamblers in 2004 and similar information is part of a study done by an anthropologist highlighted on 60 minutes.
For those on the fence, take a visit to a casino and look around at the players on a week day. The part that caught my attention was bus loads of seniors and then the field trip group from a mentally disabled home. Young disabled people that receive state money and did not have the ability to understand gambling were brought to the casino to play by their activity person. The state is know checking out the amount of state money spent at casinos.
These are the facts.  Â
Not sure what you meant by "sarcastic" ... we would hate for something to happen to your punim Patrick, would not look very pretty on the TV.

Within a 20-mile radius of Wood Village are 800 restaurants and taverns that have video lottery terminals, representing 37 percent of the state total and about $350 million in sales. (Chuck Bauman -Oregon Lottery). These lottery funds provide Job Creation & Economic Development, support Public Schools, State Parks, etc. Do you really want the money to be funneled out of the state of Oregon and into private pockets?Â
Â
And yes there are tribal casinos, but they too help support  the local communities and in particular many Native Americans who live in poverty.  They also donate millions of dollars every year to non-profits with the State. Keep it in Oregon. Support Oregon. Vote NO!
Let them build the casino because it will add some jobs to the area. It is not my problem if someone is addicted to gambling. those people are going to gamble somewhere any way and you can not stop them. Â If the new casino takes money away from the Indians who cares, that is call fair competition, Live with it or go to bed crying in your pillow.
@onceagain "If the new casino takes money away from the Indians who cares, that is call fair competition."Â
It's not about competing, it is about providing for their families and building up their communities. And it is about, FOR ONCE, keeping a promise that has been made. But it doesn't sound like that kind of thing matters to you.Â
@Lorie Buchanan What Promise ?? I did not promise to let the indians make all the money while my family starves. IF they can not compete in the modern world then they will go down like every other company. i believe in fairness to all with no special rules for those who think they are being cheated because they want it all.
 @onceagainÂ
"Let them build the casino because it will add some jobs to the area. It is not my problem if someone is addicted to gambling."
Â
It will become the people who live in the areaâs problem, but I am sure you don't live there, it won't be yours.
Â
A casino is like any other business that gives a service that people get addictions for. Who here thinks none of the money given to people standing on the side of the road does NOT go to booze/drugs?
Â
Like drug addicts, people who gamble away their money will become desperate to get more. Just like drug addicts, they often resort to crime, usually property crimes.
Â
Thus the area around this casino will likely see an increase of property crimes.
Â
Oh and if you think that's not an issue with Indian casinos, think again. Not only that, but look at the proximity of their casino to where they put their town.
Â
Like most people Native American's avoid crapping where they eat.
Â
The people who want to build this casino don't eat anywhere near where it will be built. They don't care if people crap there.
Â
@Repoman  @onceagain I agree, There's already high property crimes in the area!  You can't leave anything out in your yard, house break ins, syphoned gasoline & diesel, vandalism, tagging, assaults, muggings etc...  It can only get worse with the casino.  Not to mention the traffic in the area. People are saying that the NIMBY people are such a problem, well we get to deal with the problems generated by the casino.  And I completely agree with the other posters that says the constitution will be changed to allow just these folks to run a private casino.  Why are we considering passing a change to the constitution for just one group?  I think maybe I'll try to pass a measure only my friends businesses to exist?  They'll be job creators and everyone will come work for them, wont that be good?
This casino is evil pure and simple. It's another way for the government to get addicted to more gambling dollars while the families of addicted gamblers suffer. I'm sure this Canadian firm has done their homework and figured that they will have a large enough base of problem gamblers to sustain the business. I remember when they first brought the lottery into Oregon back in 1984. I was just a 22 year old kid but even then I knew it was bad. Now look at the damage the lottery has done in terms of broken families, bankruptcies and people embezzling from their employers to support their habits. Think of what a can of worms we would be opening by amending our constitution to allow private gambling enterprises. You're a fool if you think organized crime is not going to get into a business that is basically vice to begin with. There's a lot at stake here folks, THINK!
@Robert Wilmoth Casinos destroy families, guns kill people, cars cause accidents, burgers and fries make people fat, the list goes on and on...
@randola @Robert Wilmoth That reminds me of the guy who sued the bicycle company because they didn't warn him that going down a hill.
The bike will reach speeds that could cause harm...
He won by the way....
@cptmac11 Your point being??? I think you just made the point that americans are not responsibile for their own actions....a common theme among many of this generation that have taken personal responsibility away and opened up an era where we are all victims eventough no one is holding a gun to our head to do these things....
@Robert Wilmoth I'm voting for it. "Evil pure and simple"???? Give me a break. The lottery hasn't caused damage...people who can't control themselves cause the damage. You need a cave to hide in.
@Bewitchin1 Wrong....
They need to tell us exactly whats gonna be built there and make it clear.I would love to have a place like there advertising but I want facts on whats gonna be built.I vote yes
Not seeing any "facts"?
@Stogie Look again in the pic they look like trees
I would like to hear more about their plans for the family center. They've made all kinds of promises that it would be family-friendly, but their glossy propaganda doesn't even show the Fred Meyer next to it, and nobody is talking about the three schools located right across 223rd.Â
Â
I mean, I'm sure there will be unicorn rides, video games and a movie to dump your kids off in while mommy and daddy gamble--nobody's going to go to a casino to watch a movie with their kids, so, think about that BS for awhile.
Â
I'm not even really against construction there--something needs to be built--but I can't deny the overwhelming feeling that these people are casino moguls buttering the public up and making promises they don't intend to keep.
Â
The Democrats are all for it because according to one local political representative, "it will create a lot of union jobs."Â So for them it's not about the community, it's about the union.
@Dienekes4160 I am a Democrat and I am against the casino being built in Wood Village. Â
@Dienekes4160 As I've said before....the purpose of what you see is to show the casino complex...not surrounding shops. People are interested in what the complex will look like...not seeing something already there. And the BS is in assuming that "nobody's going to go to a casino to watch a movie with their kids..." Well...YES they will!!! The movie isn't inside the casino building. There are separate buildings that will house cinemas for heaven's sake! How many times have you gone to the cinema at Clackamas Town Center or Lloyd Center without doing some shopping in the malls??? I'm always amazed at how many people on here don't think. Lordy :(
@Dienekes4160 I was looking at the picture above and have to agree it is misleading. I'm not sure what angle they have this at, but if I had to guess, I would say where all the trees are there is a 55+ mobile home park, and a neighborhood with houses and apartments. Behind the big building is the back side of Fred Meyers. Do they plan on displacing all those people in the neighborhood to build a forest?!?
So, if Democrats are for it and it helps get people employed, it's bad, and you are against it. That about right?

 @HarryJukuÂ
Â
Yeah a typo in the HEADLINE.
Â
You think they'd get at least that part spelled correctly.
Â
@HarryJuku Interns....
Even if it gets built, and I kind of hope it does, no one is going to twist anybodies arms to go there. Either you go or don't go, it is as simple as that. About the only people who would get upset if it got built would be the Indians, because they would no longer have a monopoly on Vegas type casinos and gambling.
@theobserver "About the only people who would get upset if it got built would be the Indians, because they would no longer have a monopoly on Vegas type"
OMG. . . did you not take History in School!!??? This is not about having a MONOPOLY on Vegas type casinos! For centuries, the American Native communities have struggled to take care of their families due to the fact that everything, from the very beginning, was just ripped out from under them. Nullifying the agreement that was made and amending the Oregon constitution would greatly compromise their efforts to provide for their families and build up their communities. This one Casino will make a very big dent but it won't stop with one Casino. The grange will find a way to litter the state with more of the same. It will devastate the American Native Communities that rely on their casinos to keep them going. These men from Canada that have partnered with those from Lake Oswego don't care about the trouble it will cause. They just care about getting rich. If you care anything about the state of Oregon at all, NO will be the vote come election time.
Â
@theobserver "About the only people who would get upset if it got built would be the Indians,"
Â
BZZZZT. The local community already voted it down once. That's part of the pitched battle; when we've already told them NO and now they're wasting more of everybody's time and money trying to deceive us into allowing it under different language.
Â
It's like when you tell a used car dealer No Thanks and as soon as you get home, he's calling you trying to give you a better deal.Â
Â
If nobody goes, it falls into disrepair and decay, leaving all of the low-income workers and families it brought to town out of work and a burden to the community.
Â
There are lots of alternatives: A sports park, an entertainment complex, a public pool. They promise us all of these things but it's clear they're only going to put minimal energy into that because by its own language, it's a casino.Â
@theobserver You think the casinos in Oregon are Vegas-type? Which one have you been going to?
