Lewis and Clark student shot and killed while home for spring break

PORTLAND, Ore. – A Lewis and Clark College student was shot and killed while he was in San Francisco on spring break visiting his family.

Jacob Valdiviezo, 19, was gunned down near his family’s home early Saturday morning.

San Francisco police believe the shooting was a result of mistaken identity by a gang member. Valdiviezo had just returned to his family’s home after a night out with friends when a man asked him if he was part of a gang and shot him at least three times, police said.

Police said whoever shot Valdiviezo is still on the loose. They checked outdoor security video from a nearby grocery store, but said the shooting happened just outside of the camera’s range.

“He wasn’t affiliated with gangs or anything,” said Jacob’s cousin Anabella Valdiviezo. “He wasn’t even around here, he was home for spring break.”

Anabella said her cousin graduated with honors from high school before going to play football at Lewis and Clark. Teammates like Sifa Tonga had a hard time accepting the news.

“I love the kid, like I spent a lot of time in his room, we hung out every weekend,” said Tonga. “It’s a shocking thing to see he’s gone.”

Tonga said he got the news of Valdiviezo's death from his football coach. He said several players held a dorm room meeting Saturday to discuss the reflect on the loss.

“He was loved by everybody on campus. Everybody loves Jacob,” Tonga said. “He was our barber. He cut everyone’s hair. And his hair was always a mess because no one could cut his hair.”

Valdiviezo, a sophomore, was a wide receiver on the football team and was studying economics.

Tonga said teammates are discussing holding a public memorial for him on campus.

“He liked to have fun,” said Tonga. “He had fun wherever he was at. That’s what I’ll miss. I’ll miss it a lot, actually.”
