OREGON CITY, Ore. – A man who was arrested last year in a notorious murder-for-hire case was arraigned Thursday on 18 counts related to sex crimes against underage girls.
Prosecutors say Jason Jay Jaynes raped and sexually abused the girls in the Gladstone area between 1998 and 2001.
Investigators said all the victims knew Jaynes and that they either met him in Gladstone or lived there.
Detectives from the Oregon City Police Department and the Oregon State Police also said they have reason to believe there may be more victims.
Jaynes was arrested last year as a co-defendant in the 2011 murder of Deborah Higbee-Benton, who was found dead in her beauty salon. An autopsy found she had been shot, beaten and strangled.
Police said Higbee-Benton’s husband, former Gladstone police Sgt. Lynn Edward Benton, agreed to pay Jaynes and Jaynes’ mother – Susan Campbell – $2,000 to murder Higbee-Benton.
