Suspect in custody after standoff in Cornelius
CORNELIUS, Ore. – Police took a man into custody after a standoff in Cornelius Saturday.
Police said the man locked his girlfriend and several children inside his home and poured gasoline on her, himself and around the inside of the house. The woman and children were able to escape unharmed, police said.
Police said they received a call from a small child who reported that someone was hurting their mother.
When officers arrived just after 11 a.m., the man refused to leave his home and barricaded himself inside. Some neighboring homes were evacuated during the standoff because of the gasoline and the potential of an explosion.
"They told us everybody should leave," said neighbor Andrew Lupercio. "It's really dangerous. Something about gasoline."
A hostage negotiation team was called to the scene.
The suspect, Amaury Lopez, surrendered was taken into custody at around 4 p.m., police said. He faces charges of attempted murder, assault, kidnapping and domestic violence charges.
The home is located at 452 S. 9th Ave.
Cornelius Police, Forest Grove Police and Washington County sheriff’s deputies were on the scene. Firefighters were also on the scene.
"We were talking about the next steps for this plan and literally the next thing you know out he walks through the front door with his hands up, walked right to the officers, followed their commands, exactly as supposed to," said Forest Grove Fire spokesman David Nemeyer. "He made the right choice."
"Cornelius" - is the name of the Kellogg's Cornflakes Rooster.

From what I've seen, burning alive is never a pleasant way to go, all the crackling and blistering of the skin, and shrieking of the nerves as your fat burns, then the smell. It's good to see the man made a rational decision at the end...or maybe he just wasn't a fan of barbecue. People are weird like that sometimes. :-P
I remember seeing this video a long time ago where some guy was inside a house threatening to kill himself by lighting himself on fire. The police were all around the house and the negotiator was on the bullhorn trying to talk him out of it for hours. Then, all of a sudden, the front door busts open and this human ball of fire comes running out like the roadrunner, screaming "PUT ME OUT!!! PUT ME OUT!!!! PUT ME OUT!!!"
Â
They did put him out, but I was lmao so hard. I'm thinking death by fire is not the way to do yourself in!
@freeridenot - lets do the same thing for white folks and see what numbers we get......and then we can deport them to Europe where they all came from.   lets start with you freeridenot.
you know each and every one of knows some one who is mentally challenged , down and out and depressed , life can be very unfair to people and if you dont get the help you need stuff like this happens - he's unemployed , is back on child support, couldnt see his kid and has no real family there. im not condoning what he did but he does have mental issues - he is a human being just like each of you, one who needed help. Â i was actually one of the people who talked him down on facebook.Â
Why does society CONTINUE TO ALLOW people to be driven to INSANITY?
Â
Here's another MILLION DOLLAR "PLUS"Â PRISON & PSYCHO-WACKO expense to taxpayers......
@August100 Because Willber , The Damn Yankee don't know any better. This is the way it is and will always be until the we get a clue.
Good job by the officers and negotiators on the scene!
Glad it is over and everyone is safe. Now let's take care of this guy the right way!
Â
Too many years of dealing with these 'macho' men as a deputy and sort of wish he had lit the match after his family was out. Now this skel goes to some mental hospital where they have an extra bed for a psych eval at taxpayer expense and then gets housed in the WCSO jail at taxpayer expense and given at least two interpreters at taxpayer expense and eventually sent somewhere at taxpayer expense. Apparently folks have not figured this out yet - Mother, do you think they should have built the wall?!?
Very glad to hear that the man is in custody, and, at least from what I get from this story, no one was injured. Â Â Very scary situation, with gasoline all over inside the house...this could have turned out very differently...
Â
I hope the woman and the kids have other family and/or friends where they can stay for a while...that house won't be habitable with all those gas fumes..! Â Â
Â
Good work, LEOs..! Â Â
Another home under siege by the police state.
Â
@2easy2berightback another moro-n breathing air and taking up precious recourses someone else could use. Or maybe I should say another 2 counting you.
@2easy2berightback I think your brain is under siege.
@2easy2berightback The alternative? Wait a second, I know you from the occupy movement...
What is up with people? More and more of this crazy stuff.
I am hoping and praying for the family as they are dealing with all of this right now.
Â
My husband just called me to see if I had heard anything on the news, because he drove by there on his way out and they were carrying someone out on a stretcher with a white sheet covering them. I am not so sure this is ending well.
@mk i was actually at the scene. I am Amaury's ex-wife and he is fine. They basically had to hose the gasoline off of him so all they had was a sheet and was sent to the hospital for medical care.
@lovelyinoregon I was worried that someone was dead. I am so glad you shared that info with me .I hope the kids are okay. I am sure this was not easy for the kids or is going to be easily forgotten by them either.
@lovelyinoregon bet you're glad you're his EX-wife. Hope those weren't your kids involved.
well I am his ex-wife for reasons unrelated to anything like this. i still care about his well being and he is the father of my child. he needs help
Â
Good to know that the woman and the kids were able to escape and call for help... we can only hope for an end to this without loss of anyone's life...Â
This will end well. :)
@Riddler Just as you suspected...it ended well. :)
