State investigating 'Forever Young' medical spa

BEAVERTON, Ore. – The Oregon attorney general’s office has launched a formal investigation against a Beaverton-area laser spa.
Both the attorney general and the Better Business Bureau have received dozens of complaints that Forever Young laser medical spa mishandles payments and mistreats customers.
We started looking at Forever Young after a patient, Adriene Smith, turned to us for help.
Smith calls herself a farm girl and after more than sixty summers in the sun she looked into getting treatment at Forever Young. The company advertises its services both online and on television.
“She said ‘oh, it’ll be so wonderful. Your pores will be smooth and your skin will get tight and it’ll be wonderful,’” Smith recalled.
She bought a treatment package for $1,500 and paid up front with a check for the full amount. But when Smith showed up for her first session at the Tanasbourne location, the spa said it couldn’t treat her because she has a skin condition called vitiligo.
The spa told her they would take care of getting her money back. That was in May.
Until she called us, Smith said she had been trying to get her $1,500 back with no success. She said she called around 45 times to inquire about her refund.
In January, Smith filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. When she still didn’t get her money, she called the KATU Problem Solvers.
“I can’t let things go on that are not right,” she said.
KATU found 35 complaints filed with the state attorney general against Forever Young since 2009, a year after Forever Young first registered as a business in Oregon.
Forever Young also has a “D” rating with the BBB with 50 complaints on file. Four of those are complaints the BBB considers “serious.” The company has actually improved since they were given an “F” rating in February.
A chart from the BBB shows Forever Young has more complaints than any other business in the region in the same industry and of similar size.
Two of the complaints are about advertising or sales issues. Eleven are about billing or collection and 37 complaints stem from problems with the service or products. The BBB also says this past December it found a pattern of complaints regarding refund and sales practice issues.
Pressured into tanning package
“The experience I had was just horrible,” said customer Irene Shavlovskiy.
Shavlovskiy bought a tanning package at the spa’s Beaverton location but said she felt pressured to buy and canceled later the same day.
She said she had trouble getting her $70 deposit back, despite making about 50 calls to the company over four months. During that time, she said Forever Young twice charged her card $40 even though she had canceled the contract.
Shavlovskiy finally got her deposit refunded when she filed a complaint with the state.
“I’m never going back,” she said.
Both the attorney general and the BBB have received other complaints, as well. Some are from people who said they couldn’t get in for appointments or from people who said the treatments didn’t work as promised.
“People who are signing up for packages, they don’t necessarily feel like they got intended results from their services or maybe they paid up front and didn’t get to schedule their services,” said Kyle Kavas with the Better Business Bureau.
Painful spider vein treatment
Mistee Thomas owns two day care centers around the Portland area. She went to Forever Young at Tanasbourne last May to remove spider veins on her legs.
“They said ‘we have this great procedure. It’s going to take a few minutes and it’s going to be great for you,’” Thomas said.
But she said the person doing the laser treatment targeted a live vein.
“She just kept hitting that until she had it dialed up all the way and just hit over and over, repeatedly hit the same area,” Thomas said.
Thomas said the technician zapped the live vein about 20 times until Thomas begged her to stop.
“I was in tears,” she said. “I said ‘no more, I can’t do this anymore.’”
Thomas told us she is still in pain months after the procedure. She also said Forever Young has never responded to her calls and emails.
“I don’t even merit a phone call back,” she said. “It’s sad. I mean, they sure did charge my credit card. I didn’t even get a refund. Oh no, I still paid for the procedure that I’m going to pay for for the rest of my life.”
We took our findings to the company’s Tanasbourne location, the same place where Smith and Thomas said they went for treatment. We asked to talk about the complaints, but someone who said he was a manager asked us to leave. Company manager Jennifer Zemp also declined to answer our questions.
KATU asked several more times for Forever Young to respond on camera, but they denied our requests. The company also issued a series of threats against KATU if we brought you this story.
The company did eventually put out a lengthy statement on their website saying, in part, that the spa has more than 50,000 happy customers and the number of complaints amount to less than one percent of their client base.
The company also claimed they “made things right” with all of the complaining parties. Both the attorney general’s office and the BBB said the company has responded to a number of complaints.
Smith said she received a full refund the day after KATU visited the Forever Young offices.
The attorney general’s office said they receive more than 50,000 total complaints each year, but they only open about 115 full investigations, as they have with Forever Young.
I am so happy to also see that this company has been brought to the spot light. What forever young is selling is nothing more than a bait and switch. I have bought a expensive Qswitch package 3 months ago and have been cancelled on 4 times, each of those times employees were trying to upsell the package. I have filed a complaint with BBB and intend on getting an attorney if this isn't resolved this week. Bait and switch advertising is a violation of consumer laws. It is a type of fraudulent business practice where one party, such as a manufacturer or business, will offer the "bait". This could be a product that is advertised at a very low cost and is designed to lure in a customer. Once the customer is attracted, the manufacturer will pull the "switch". The proposed product will no longer be available at the advertised price, but instead it will be offered at a much higher price or an altogether different product will be offered. Forever Young should be ashamed of themselves!
I have read these reports and I am pleased to say I am and have been a client of Forever young Oregon for a very long time. I love the service I receive and appriciate the staff very much. Most of all I love the results. I used accent and have went from a size 14 to a size 8 and can't believe it. My skin is tight and I look amazing just in time for summer. Thank you Forever Young
Super excited just had my first pixel treatment and my face looks amazing. I have received so many compliments and have even gone out with out foundation and powder on. It's been years since I was able to do that. Can't wait until my next appointment. I have received the best customer service and love the tech who preformed my treatment.
Yay yay yay!!! I cannot explain how happy I am to have seen this investigation. I had seriously considered contacting the media regarding my HORRIBLE services and am so excited to see that this company is being nailed for their lies, scams and deceit. I paid over $1500 and received 3 treatments because I could not get money back, no calls regarding my concerns, I had corporate staff hang up on me... this company truly is insane for ignoring and mistreating people and they will suffer the consequences. The facilities are dirty, they lie to you to sell the package, the technicians tell you that treatments don't work....all the claims are REAL! Happy day!!!
 KATU if you had any respect you would take down the comments about the children. It's off topic and just wrong in all aspects.
I know the Zemp's and have know them for years and they are a great family. Their boys are the best children with bright futures. It is very sad that they have been pulled into this game. These are all lies and made up stories. The only disgrace I see here are people who are attacking children and peoples looks.

@Helena If these are such great kids, why has Brandon been running a "charity" called Wakeboarding for Autism since at least 2011, raising funds and talking about events that have not happened - except that Casey (his brother) is in pictures. It is not a 501c3 charity, either.  If it smells fishy, it is probably a fish.  You are right, though, it is wrong to vilify the children with the parents. Except that FY has done autism fundraisers.Â

Alright....time to get a few things straight...first Jen Zemp claims on her ads she is a mother of 3....NOT TRUE! She has ONE son, the other 2 belong to her husband Ron, who owes backed child support and leaves everything in business names so he doesn't have to pay up! His oldest son is NOT being recruited by major schools THEY are out desperately trying to sale him to any college to play.....they moved to Prineville, Oregon a 4A school his junior year come on if he was so big league why down grade? Because Mr. Zemp got accused of misconduct by a young female....they are dishonest people who live a high life style because they steal from others! Sick and sad! The dishonesty has just came to light but has been going on for countless years with countless innocent victims. Meanwhile they drive Hummers, Mercedes, and have hired help to drive their children and caravan them around because they are too lazy to do it themselves. Sad deal! Feel sorry for the kids they are nice kids, but this is NOT their MOM as she advertises!
@Candice You know what it is a very sad day when you attack minor children. A mother is a person who cares for children not who had them. Also if you would like to attack someone business practices hats fine but do not attack minor children. Forever young is an amazing spa. I can not even believe it has come to this. Everyone has to stand in front of God one day just like you do and I pray he has mercy on you for everything you have said about minor children. If you do not like MRS. Zemp's business practices say that leave the children out of it. She is a Mom and a very good one.
Forever Young Oregon is a wonderful spa. I have had no problem scheduling my appointments because I schedule them in advance just like you do with your dentist or Doctor. I work at a dentist office and we are scheduled out for four weeks, new patients have to wait. If you miss your appointment it's another four weeks. The staff that I have dealt with have been completely gracious and empathetic to my situation. I can only speak for the spa I go to however it is in top notch condition and sanitary.Â

@Kandi On what planet did you have NO PROBLEM scheduling appointments? Try calling to set up one. The hold button is the last thing you will here for minutes. You may even be just left there. It happens all the time.
I have had three hip surgeries this year for femoral ace tabular impingement and have not been able to work out at all. I am currently using accent and V shape at forever young. I have had great results and lost 3 pant sizes. I went from a size 9 to a size 6. Not to mention that my cellulite has pretty much disappeared and my skin looks amazing. I never thought I would see results this fast. Thanks to Forever Young I am starting to get my body back.Â
 The customer service I received was great the staff walked me through the whole procedure and spa was in amazing condition. Also, I was able to meet Jen Zemp a couple of times and she is very down to earth and beautiful...
I watched the news cast for Forever Young the employee identity was protected. I am a huge fan of KATU however how do we know if she was a former employee there was no proof, no documentation and for some reason wanted her identity protected. How do we know it wasn't a competitor or someone who was angry at them. Yes I want to see news but no hear say. I need to see facts. So please KATU start reporting the news again.Â
Also, I have to say I to have see the commercials and think Jen Zemp is very pretty. Â
I am so sick of seeing Forever Young's ads on tv!!! They are false advertising on what the treatments really do. And that freaky looking Jennifer should not be their spokesperson. She looks like she's had way too many procedures, and not good ones. The one treatment - Accent - does not make you loose weight. They should not be so high pressure at selling the procedures. Just leaves a bad impression. There are many more GOOD tanning and laser places to go to in the area. Good for KATU!!!!!
I watched the new cast this evening and gee KATU are you that hard up for news stories. Please start reporting on things that are important. Like unemployment rates, starving children, homeless ext. Come on you did a story on a women who received a refund, another who also received a refund and a women who showed you no proof of a medical problem do to her veins. You just take peoples word now. Now another story on Forever Young. At this point you look like you are been vindictive because they stuck up for  themselves  and you didn't like it and said you were threatened.Â
I was a true fan of KATU and will start watching again when you start reporting the news again.. Â
I am a client of Forever Young Oregon and find this all very appalling and sickening that KATU has allowed this to go on. This is getting completely out of hand.  I am a business owner and I can guaranty you that I don't have a 100% customer satisfaction. I have more than 1% of unhappy clients. I have used many of Forever Young's services and received outstanding results.Â

I am a client of Forever Young and have been for two years. I have had nothing but wonderful experiences at Forever Young. I have used their V Shape system and went from a size nine to a size six in. I work in the medical field and was very pleased with how clean and well kept the spa is. Â Â
 I have been following this story and have read many of the comments. I think that KATU is upset that Forever Young made a couple of comments and they said they were threatened. Also people are saying they are mafia. This whole thing is being blown way out of proportion. I am so done watching KATU harass this company and allow people to threaten and say horrible things about Forever Young and Jen Zemp. You guys have really hit bottom for a news station to allow such disgusting things to be on their site.Â

@DPalmer I am an actual customer of Forever Young and will defend them because I have had a great experience. I have had microderm, Q-switch and am currently doing tattoo removal. I can always send you my before and after pictures of the mild acne scars I had. I received amazing results. Also, I have been taking photos for myself of the progress of my tattoo removal and can send you those as well. If you would like to see my progress.Â
 I think it is very sad when adults attack others looks and threaten them. It's truly inappropriate. This women is being bullied. I have seen her many times, she looks amazing.Â

@JulieRVSPlease! Forever Young Oregon has plenty of complaints but they use phony reviews on sites like yelp and insiderpages so they can hide all the negative things about their business. Furthermore its one thing for a customer to give a bad review, but when the state attorney comes in the picture because you are not using licensed people to perform services, then its a safety issue. Forever young oregon has been fined, sued and now they are going back to court. There is no time limit of purchase to file a report with the Attorney General's Office. They are doing a huge investigation into the business practices of Forever Young and will be your advocate to get your money back. A friend of mine purchased a Q-Switch package to remove stretch marks on her hips in anticipation of a trip to Hawaii. Forever Young neglected to tell her that she would not be able to go in the sun for nearly a month. She called FY Corporate to get a refund but got no return call. Recently, she filed with the AG. Since the KATU story, she got a response from the AG and FY contacted her to discuss a refund.
Does anybody know how to get in touch with the news people or any of the state people involved in this?
Oh, one more thing - that Jimmy guy that is in the Qswitch ads? He used to be in the Pixel ads, saying exactly the same thing.

Forever Young is filled with lies, most well covered up. Â Employees quit because they are horrified at the way people are treated. Â Complaints have been filed by employees because they are not getting breaks. Â Employees are constantly complaining about back pain, to their clients and in the back area (where clients can hear). Â I have been told in 2 of their facilities that at least one of their tables doesn't move, which would make it much harder for the employees. Â Employees have told me so much horrible stuff, and I have talked with clients as well who are literally suffering from their treatments, like the woman who got a burn on her thigh during a hair removal - a bad one - and no one ever called her back. Or the woman (who cares WHAT she does for a living!) who now has discoloration on her chest because a treatment that should NOT have been done without a doctor present. Â So much of this laser stuff is sketchy in legality, and it is so scary that people would get invasive procedures done by someone whose license took them six months to get. I wish someone would file a class action suit. Â I would be willing to BET a lot more people would come forward.

This company is awful. Shab and Jen sell you these great priced packages but dont let you use them. They will say the package is expired, they are too busy to let you use the packages, or somehow you are running low on them. They are truly liars and I have no doubt the state of oregon will be closing them down soon. I looked on the better business bureau and they have a rating of F. Both www.clubtanoregon and www.foreveryoungoregon. com are rip offs.. When you get a treatment the employees complain the whole time on how tired they are from working a 12 hour day with no breaks. It is not restfull and makes you feel bad for the employees. The employees are also this wierd color from Tanning it is crazy, espically Shab. I dont know how Shab and Jen sleep at night. I am finally done with my package their and I am so glad. I am tired of being attacked and treated like I am stupid. Once again do not use them. Once again, they will not let you use the beauty packages because they are too full, steal them from you, or they expire. What a joke..at its best!

I've been a customer with Zemps since late 70's in Hillsboro where at Corner of TV & Riverroad Hwy when they first started their business. I have followed them since. I've been tanning buying spa packages since. Never been unhappy and the employees have always been courteous to me. I'm even a Silver Fox & 66 and have had many compliments on my appearance and take pride in my appearance. Thanks to my Italian & Native genealogy. A satisfied customer.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for all of your honest responses!  These people are liars, crooks, irresponsible, inappropriate,  inexperienced....and should be shut down!  There are far more complaints on the BBB then reported....they have somehow just side stepped them.  They had over 35 complaints a year ago when I filed mine!  This place is a major rip off.Â
I love the past employees that have come forward exposing their rip off methods!  Jenn...miss plastic scarey face...you are a joke now all over Portland now.  I would wear a mask if I were you! Get the hell out of our town!  Your commercials are the laughing stock all over the Portland Metro area. Â

I have a package bought in like AUG 2012Â for my wife, we spent $1100 up front and tried canceling the next day after we gave it much thought. Called the cell number given by the office in Tanasbourne and spoke with a lady that told me she would call me back. I got a call shortly after by the sales person that sold me the package and he was told that they were going to fire him if I canceled. I of course felt bad and decided to keep it. I made several appts and had 3 to 4 treatments by 3 to 4 different girls doing it all 3 to 4 different ways. Laser fat removal on tummy and sides... I had them call and cancel my appts and I have been told When I knew I had an appt that I didnt....I was allways confused by the stories from each girl on how I should scedule the appts..Length of time between each treatment. I have still lots of service left but when I call they are booked up for months at a time. Very frustrating!
@Zippy123Â I used to work there. They will make you say that because you have to keep up your "sales numbers" Its bs. Also, all that happens is they lose that 7% commission...i would work 12 hour shifts, with ZERO breaks. They have audio and video surveilence, you arent allowed to sit down in front in case customers come in. If you go to the back you can miss customers and youre in trouble. Youre required to wear high heels and a blazer, for 12 hours...with no break AND the ac was broke most of the summer. That doesnt even scratch the surface as to why I left...and I was a manager. I know many others whom dealt with similar things everyday
I haven't seen any of their commercials on the air - maybe I'm just lucking out, or have they pulled those?
