Suspect shot up car in Jack in the Box drive-thru

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland police say somebody fired several shots at people in a car as they sat in the drive-thru of a Southeast Portland fast food restaurant on Friday afternoon. Nobody was hit.

The shooting happened at the Jack in the Box on 82nd Avenue a few blocks north of Holgate.

Police spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson said a man and woman were sitting in their car in the drive-thru line when an unknown man approached them and fired multiple shots before running away.

The gunman hit the car and the building, although he missed the two people in the car. Officers searched the area but could not find him.

Witness Ben Austin lives nearby and was standing across the street when the shooting began. He said it looked as if the shooter was aiming for the passenger in the car.

"They were trying to get out of there," Austin said. "They rear-ended the guy in front of them and then they threw it in reverse. He was really lucky. The bullet holes are in the door."

After the shooting, the suspect ran into 82nd Avenue and past Austin. He said the gun looked like a black 9 millimeter pistol.

Simpson said the suspect is a black man in his 20s with a skinny build. He was wearing all black clothing.

Investigators think the shooting is gang related and detectives from the police bureau’s Gang Enforcement Team are investigating.

Simpson said anybody with information about the shooting can call the gang team at (503) 823-4106.
