Synthetic drug 'spice' linked to kidney failure

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A form of synthetic marijuana known as "spice" has caused at least a half-dozen cases of sudden kidney failure in Oregon and southwest Washington since May, the Oregon Health Authority reported Friday.
The agency said experts are analyzing samples to determine what toxin is causing problems. It has also asked doctors across the region to report cases of kidney failure that might be linked to the drug.
"This is not just a bad trip," said Gary Schnabel, executive director of the Oregon Board of Pharmacy, which voted to ban the sale and possession of synthetic cannabis products last year. "We are talking about your kidneys, and you only have two of them."
The six patients requiring hospitalization were from the Portland, Salem and Roseburg areas, as well as Vancouver, Wash. The most recent case occurred in late September.
Five of the patients were 18 or younger, and all were male. Though they have been discharged, they remain at heightened risk for kidney problems later in life.
Spice, which is typically smoked, is a mixture of plant material sprayed with a designer drug similar to THC, the main psychoactive component of cannabis. It's marketed under street names such as "K2," ''herbal incense" and "potpourri."
A University of Michigan study found that 11.4 percent of high school seniors reported using synthetic marijuana in the past year. There is no such statistic for Oregon.
The manufacturers are generally overseas and unknown, and there are often no ingredients on the package. The Oregon patients bought the illegal drug over-the-counter at places such as convenience stores, gas stations and tobacco shops, said Dr. Katrina Hedberg, the state epidemiologist.
Hedberg also told KATU News that doctors remain baffled about the chemical that is in the synthetic marijuana that causing the havoc.
"We don't have any good idea," she said. "It's a synthetic marijuana. It's composed of some sort of plant product. We don't know what the plant is, sprayed with some sort of chemical, and we don't know what that is. But it's similar to THC, which is the active ingredient in marijuana."
"It's very hard to regulate something that's being sold as potpourri," Hedberg told The Associated Press. "Doesn't that sound like something you put in your bathroom that smells nice?"
"It's a clear effort to circumvent the law," she added. "The people who are buying it know what it's intended use is — while not explicit."
But law enforcement has taken notice. A federal grand jury in Idaho indicted five people in July on charges they conspired to distribute synthetic marijuana products. As part of the investigation, 14 search warrants were issued at businesses in Idaho, Oregon and southwestern Washington.
Meanwhile, authorities in Wyoming arrested three people in March after several users in the Casper area were hospitalized with kidney failure.
Poison centers nationwide responded to 3,200 calls related to synthetic marijuana or "bath salts" in 2010 and that number soared to more than 13,000 last year, said Jodie Underwood, Drug Enforcement Administration special agent in Seattle.
"A teenager thinks it safe because it's being sold in a gas station," Underwood said. "And these products are not for human consumption."
Dr. Sharon Su, a kidney specialist at Legacy Emanuel’s Randall Children's Hospital, began treating a 17-year-old boy in August. (Read his firsthand account)
"His kidneys were shutting down," she told KATU News Friday.
The boy admitted he and four friends smoke synthetic marijuana. The boy was the only one of his friends who got sick.
"He was in really bad shape," Su said. "He did not eat for several days. He was in a lot of pain, which is really unusual for kidney failure."
Federal law enforcement does have a good lead on which batch of synthetic marijuana is tainted because of cooperation from the family of the boy Su treated.
"His father said, 'Tell me where it is, and I'll go buy it.' The next day he was able to buy it and bring it back."
Health officials are testing the synthetic marijuana to determine what the chemical is that's causing kidney failure.

KATU News reporter Dan Tilkin contributed to this report.
Drugs used for recreational purposes have always been harmful to human health. Psychotic drugs make people less conscious of their real world. Any person who is trying to sell another a drug is trying to make them less aware for a reason. That reason always has dark purpose.
Why would our leaders want it on the streets - why would our parents want our children drugged.
There is something seriously wrong with peoples judgements.
People must teach each other about the bad effects of drugs and not pander to this mob of abuse lurking in the backgrounf for financial gain.
people really do die from this crap! my friend just died last week from this "spice" he smoked it all the time and was always fine but out of the blue it took his life this needs to be banned everywhere people die all the time from this stuff i already know 2 people that live by me who died from it.
he was told it was safe.
Too bad about the kids, hope they learned something out of this. If Marijuana were legal this would not be a problem because there would not be a need for fake synthetics.
There's also anecdotal evidence that excessive use of cannabis makes users lazy and stupid(i.e., Democrats and Obama supporters.) Even more Darwin candidates!
Here's what the drug really does to you noseto. and you wonder why robme put his dog on the roof.

stupid and lazy doesn't even come close to this
@swimmer Brilliant! Were you even remotely getting close to making a point with this?
@swimmer And that's just the short list.
We should just legalize the real deal-no one has ever died from cannabis use alone, at least to my knowledge. Every major organ in the human body contains specific cannabinoid receptors-look it up if you don't believe me. There's anecdotal evidence pointing to the fact that ingesting a small, non-psychoactive amount of cannabis orally on a regular basis actually improves the function of the human organism. Marijuana is illegal, and that's the real crime.
And we should feel bad about this because...? We'd have supported them with state and gov't checks their entire lives. Long live Darwin Awards!
Kids who experiment with dangerous drugs come from wealthy republican parents.Like me.Nice job at generalizing.
@nostromo There is a thing called empathy... and guess what? it is totally free;)
@pique Pique, You seem to have appointed yourself our moral compass. How about you get over yourself and go back to mom's basement? I'm sure your check will come in tomorrow.
@nostromo @pique Self appointment of being the moral compass for secular society is actually a specialty for rightwingers like yourself.
@pique @nostromo It sounds like you are a awesome person.Anyone who has the dedication to provide care for their ailing parents and grandparents has nothing but respect from me. My mother has early alzheimers.I know that many challenges are in store for my older brothers and myself.
@nostromo I'm an in house care giver for my diabetic grandfather who has heart issues and lost his wife and only son (my dad) just recently. He receives social security and VA help but isn't able to buy all his meds without assistance (and he does not and never did drink or smoke). None of the other grand kids and the widowed wife come to visit or help out. Some of the drugs he takes make him tired, urinate frequently and moody. What good to society is he?
Â
I am a student of writing and computer science and have worked everything from McDonalds to Macy's to machine shops cutting steel to call centers dealing with credit card information. I also cleaned up some HUD units full of animal feces, broken dope pipes and dirty needles and luckily never got poked. I live in a ranch style house that has no basement btw but, I think you could consider my den a basement.
Â
The internet is cool and sometimes I get out of my chair and... let's see... I mow the lawn, trim the bushes and hedges, do dishes, wash clothes, sweep and mop, dust and vacuum, prepare some but not all meals, help monitor his meds, field calls from telemarketers, trim his toenails and try to help a man that tells me he has less life ahead than before and feels that certain parts of the family are just waiting for him to die so they can get whatever their expectations entail.
Â
Oh yeah... thanks nostromo... maybe someday I'll explain how fun and exciting it is to deal with my mentally ill mother that's living completely off the State and is doped up drugs that most of us can't even pronounce. Cheers! Â
Â
Â
Â
Â
Well, they should have known better, and actually more than likely do know better. But as long as people want to do stupid things to themselves this will continue. I am wondering who is going to pay the hospital bills for these people? I totally agree with Agent Sydney Bristow!
@Just Lookin I totally believe that some of you are callous and cynical and have issues with unwarranted self-importance. You "should" know better than to deal out death and judgement on a whim but, apparently you don't.
@pique How am I 'deal out death' ? These are very ignorant people are willing 'consuming' these products in order to get high.
No one is forcing them.
Â
If people choose to do stupid things that result in their deaths, no sympathy here. If they can survive on their own and learn from their mistakes, then good for them.
pique,
Who twisted the arm of those taking th drugs? How many times do we see commentors saying "It is my choice"?
So, if they decide they wish to abuse drugs even though they know better...then it is on their shoulders to handle their mistakes. Not hard to figure out really.
Â
Â
@Just Lookin It's not hard to understand that some of you want these people to be "eliminated". If you really believe that, why not be proactive and "eliminate" them before they start running up bills that fall on the taxpayers? Do you wish death upon people that eat and exercise poorly? That lifestyle leads to health problems that are the number one cause of death in the US. Â
I remember spice from Dune!
 @jpk The spice must flow!
Good. Hopefully all the dummies that take this crap will meet their end for their stupidity.
@Agent Sydney Bristow Once upon a time I was a teenager that did some really stupid things.I'm glad nobody wished for my death. How about you? Were you ever a teenager? Did you ever experiment with drugs?
@noneofyourbizzness Sure I did stupid things as a teenager, however none of those actions resulted in my organs failing or needing hospitalization to save my life.
Â
I guess you can say I was never THAT dumb. I guess being a part of the honor society does have benefits!
@Agent Sydney Bristow Lots of dumb teenagers like mysel used to drive my mom's car over 100 mph which could have resulted in more than my organs shutting down. What teenage male hasn't tried to see how fast their mom's car would go? So yes lots of people have made potentially life threatening mistakes.I'm sure the kids who have experienced kidney faliure definately learned their lesson.
"when someone does Spice it is a personal choice" (borrowed from B Smizzle).
These individuals knew that it was not right to take the drugs. If they are illiterate enough to not know better, then I might feel sorry for them. With all the information regarding the use of drugs on TV,on the internet, in the newspapers...no one has an excuse to "Not Know better'.
Â
Experimenting with drugs is not a good idea at all...there, you have been told again.
@noneofyourbizzness Since when was this story about experimenting with marijuana shutting down your organs?
Â
This is a story about synthetic drugs almost killing the people who are choosing to use them.Â
Â
I guess the lesson here is that you can't compare your experiences / choices with the people in this story.
@Just Lookin Trust me I learned my lesson many moons ago.I don't need to be told. That being said,I suppose you were absolutely perfect growing up? Never drove drunk or too fast after seeing pictures of crumpled cars? As far as marijuana is concerned,I have been experimenting with it for three decades and I would like to think that I turned out ok.
@Agent Sydney Bristow All this talk about winning Darwin awards and eliminating certain people from the gene pool is becoming very disturbing to me. Your comment infers that you hope anybody that tries "that crap", dies. I'm certain that the doctors treating these patients are trying to save their life, learn more about the problems and get people educated as to avoid these risky behaviors and negative reactions.
Â
Has the idea that you yourself might be considered a dummy that needs to "go away" ever occurred to you? If you really think these people need to die, why let it go this far and waste resources when we could easily "end the stupidity" a lot earlier and for less money than waiting for the dummies to take a trip to the ER?
@pique For one thing, I've never ingested / inhaled / consumed anything in an attempt to get 'high' that resulted in the shutdown my organs or have performed anything dangerous that resulted in the need for medical intervention to save my life.
Â
Why let it go this far? Well, not waiting would most likely result in 'murder' to 'end their stupidity' for them. People have free will, if they choose to do something so stupid that results in their organs shutting down, then they should not be allowed to have medical intervention.
Such services should be reserved for people who do not take this 'crap' and are constructive members of society.
Â
Which kind of person are you?
@Just Lookin There's a reason why it's illegal to do a lot of things because of the dangers involved for participating in the illegal activity.I had a group of high school friends die in a horrible car crash caused by excessive speed.Over three decades later,I still remember my lost friends and their families including the driver of the car.If you have a close family member die from making a mistake I hope people will show empathy for you and your family. If you put out kindness for your fellow man you will find that it will come back to you.At least that's what I've experienced in my life.
""It's a clear effort to circumvent the law," she added. "The people who are buying it know what it's intended use is â while not explicit."
Â
To me, this means the knew it was illegal for a reason, yet decided to get it anyway.
I feel sorry for their families but not them.
@Agent Sydney Bristow @pique I'm the kind of person that believes that any human with a life threatening condition regardless of how it occurred should be treated in a hospital.I know the republican motto is "let em die" but the right thing to do would be to take care of the sick. After all that what that liberal socialist hippe named Jesus did no?
@Agent Sydney Bristow  @pique People die from legal medications all the time. One big problem with these synthetic marijuana concoctions is there is no formal regulation and quality control. However, there is an inherent risk with most drugs (you've heard the long winded disclaimers on tv ads and in the small print for any given pharmaceutical).
Â
My main concern is about good regulations and good information to help people make an informed decision. Hoping people die when there is the likelihood they were unaware or misunderstood the risks, seems really crass to me.
Â
Just saying no may be wise but it is a slogan that doesn't explain certain situations and conditions and any contraindications that may occur.
Â
Calling people stupid and hoping they die is antithetical to empathy and learning. I'm sure some people would pop some valium, call it a night and forget about that problem until they get up and prepare breakfast and a dose of methylphenidate for the kids.
agent for your stupid comment we need to end your life so that you don't reproduce. its called getting the idiots out of the gene pool right?
@Agent Sydney Bristow  @swimmer As clever as associating swimming with sperm is, where exactly are you in the gene pool?
@swimmer How ironic that your name is 'swimmer' and you must be asked to leave the gene pool.
Must be fate.
If the real stuff were legal then this wouldn't have been a problem... just sayin
@nerdbyrd I'm certain there will be an age requirement to purchase pot, doubtful it'd be 18, probably 21, so legalizing pot wouldn't really solve this.
It's OK to put dangerous stuff in your body and tout it's benefits? But worry about fluoride in water? Is there a disconnect in reasonableness here? Sorry, but I'll stick with fluoridated water.
@jpk One MAJOR difference, when someone does Spice it is a personal choice where as water fluoridation is a mandate by the government, you don't have a choice!
Wow! We certainly second-guess everything the government does, don't we? Good thing we believed when the polio epidemic was stopped by vaccination!
I'll stick with the real stuff
I can't get all wound up about folks doing stuff like this and ruining their lives. There is no amount of laws that will fix defective humans from doing stupid things.
Â
Hopefully a few will learn from this. More than likely those that can learn from this are the ones who would not do this to begin with.
@RalphCramden These are kids who haven't matured yet.I take it you never experimented with potentially dangerous drugs? I'm glad when I wen't through my "stuff" my friends and family reached out and helped me as opposed to labeling me as "defective"
 @noneofyourbizzness Â
Oh I did my share of drugs for sure. And if I killed my kidneys it was all my fault and no one else's. My friends were doing the same drugs so no reaching out there. I was living on the streets and my family had no idea where I was.
Â
As I said I can't get all wound up about people doing stupid things. I same my empathy for those who are innocent folks who have bad things happen to them.
@RalphCramden @noneofyourbizzness I am now off all Rx drugs except on 600mg Ibuprphin each morning, I smoke when I need to and get along very well. None, try medical Marijuana for pain, Glucosamine for the arthritis, your back sounds almost as bad as mine just avoid surgery if you can and no metal if possible. My physical therapy is rock climbing, it is very low impact on the spine and forces me to flex through the arthritis.
 @noneofyourbizzness  @swede760 Â
As the telemers come undone we start to decay and fall apart. It's the life of a carbon based life form and at least for now there is not stopping it.
Â
Try to limit the narcs. I have seen too many end up with narcotic psychosis after using high levels of narcs for a period of a few years. It doesn't take long before higher and higher doses are required to treat the same level of pain.
Â
I can tell you how it will play out. We eventually die...8-} The leading cause of death is birth and no one gets out of here alive.
@swede760 @RalphCramden I've been having increasingly intense leg pain. After a MRI it turns out that I have spinal osteoarthritis, degenerative bone disease, five herniated discs.I don't know what to expect now.My doctor has put me on Oxycodone and there is a chance that I might have to go on morphine.Unfortunately my job requires me to be running my rear off ten plus hours a day without any chance of ever retiring. It certainly will be interesting to see how this plays out.Getting older is so much fun!
 @noneofyourbizzness Â
I try to avoid all drugs and just deal with the pain. Every now and then I end up taking some oxycodone for the pain but I don't use more than about 30 per year. Most of that is in clusters after a hard bike ride or some tiling which is hard on my knees.
Â
It really does suck getting old and having so much joint pain. I lived a pretty hard live for a long time and now I am paying for it.
Â
Overall I would not change a thing. I have had a good life and look forward to each day and the projects that I am working on. I just wish I could do my projects without suffering later in the evening.
@RalphCramden @noneofyourbizzness I can relate to your experience all too well. My back is shot and I am in severe pain all the time. The doctors put me on Morphine for 9 years. My current Dr. gave me my OMMA Card and weaned me off the opiates. 12 weeks to wean off and a total of 4 months of withdrawals. I will never go back, my body had all but shut down and I gained 100lbs. I have lost the wieght and can control my pain better and am not getting sick if I do not have enough medicine.
@RalphCramden Speaking of horrible withdrawals.I allowed my doctor to talk me into taking cymbalta. He didn't talk to me about the withdrawal symptoms and I was stupid enough to not research it.I accidentally ran out of it on a vacation and I can only get it through Kaiser. The withdrawal symptoms are excruciating and horrible.I get these horrible brain zaps like I'm getting struck in the head by lightning.I have read that the withdrawal symptoms can last for as long as six months. They can even cause heart faliure.Unfortunately I'm stuck taking this horrible drug for the time being.I wonder if I will have to be hospitalized in order to get off of it.
 @noneofyourbizznessÂ
I appreciate your comments.Â
Â
My drug addiction was not as bad to kick as one would think. It was all over in about 10 days of pure hell. I still remember the withdrawals. But after that is was pretty easy and I have never looked back.
Â
To me, kicking cigarettes is more problematic that narcotics. I was never a smoker but I have seen a lot of folks who have tried to quit many times and it is difficult. I am always impressed with folks who quit smoking and stay clean after 5 years or longer.
 @swimmerÂ
I cleaned up my life and have been clean for over 40 years. I admitted my mistakes and turned my life around.
Â
When I applied for jobs I was honest about my drug past. For the first few years I had to pee in the cup many times. After it came back negative they finally realized that I was clean and they gave up.
Â
People can turn their lives around in case you were not aware.
Â

@RalphCramden I especially have empathy for people who are and were in your position.Addiction affects everyone from all ages and walks of life.I'm certainly glad that you got your life together. There are so many that aren't as fortunate as you.
@noneofyourbizzness  @RalphCramden "I'm glad when I wen't through my "stuff" my friends and family reached out and helped me as opposed to labeling me as "defective"... and in need of being dead huh.
Â
Yeah, we need more empathy. Maybe there's app or some new med for that?
