What is goverment's role in what you eat?

By Kim Quintero KVAL NewsEUGENE, Ore. - Big Macs will soon come with a healthy side of calorie counts. But the bill passed by the Oregon Legislature is sparking debate between Lane County Commissioners over the government's role in public heath -- and the state overstepping its boundaries. Legislators voted last week to require chain restaurants with 15 or more locations to provide nutrition facts on paper to consumers by next year. Expect to see calorie counts posted on menus by 2011. The law also stops local governments from enacting or enforcing their own nutrition labeling policies. Multnomah County, Oregon's only jurisdiction to create menu label requirements, has to immediately end their program. Lane County was creating their own menu policy, but those efforts were killed by county commissioners Wednesday morning. That's sweet relief for at least one who feels the government's role doesn't involve disclosing what's inside your Whopper. "I really find it offensive that the government is trying to tell everyone what to do about everything," said Bill Dwyer, Lane County Commissioner. Others disagreed. "The cost to society and often to government are greater later on if we aren't involved," said Rob Handy, Lane County Commissioner. Commissioners also said the legislature was violating the state constitution by passing this bill because of rules prohibiting lawmakers from forcing local governments to reverse their own ordinances after they've been put into place. "So we as a board may want to think about challenging the legislature's authority to preempt Multnomah County -- because we're next," said Dwyer. The county's public health board also said Wednesday, they'll look at creating a menu labeling policy for school districts, and require vendors in county buildings to provide nutrition information, which the new bill doesn't regulate. |
