Could be a long line: Wash. looks to hire a pro on pot
SEATTLE (AP) - Wanted: A green thumb with extensive knowledge of the black, or at least gray, market.
As Washington state tries to figure out how to regulate its newly legal marijuana, officials are hiring an adviser on all things weed: how it's best grown, tested, labeled, and cooked into brownies.
Those angling for the job are expected to meet Wednesday in Tacoma with state bidding experts to discuss the requirements and hiring process. Officials reserved a convention center hall that fits 275 people - plus an overflow room.
Last fall, Washington and Colorado became the first states to pass laws legalizing the recreational use of marijuana and setting up systems of state-licensed growers, processors and retail stores.
Adults over 21 can buy up to an ounce of heavily taxed cannabis.

Am I the only one that sees this as ridiculous?  Why would someone go in and buy an ounce of, "Heavily taxed cannabis" when they can go buy it from the local dealer for less?

The real problem for the State in this hiring effort is that they won't be able to find anyone qualified that can also pass a wizz-quiz.
If the State had any brains at all they would run this operation like a business. Rent out several large grow facilities in various regions of Washington and hire from the local pool of talent to tend and grow the product. Then just flood the market to eliminate the competition....they already have the hired goons/enforcers to harass the competition. Then they would own the market. No worries about making back the investment money.Â

The way that the state is currently pussy-footing around the issue the smartest smokers will continue to buy from local retailers simply to maintain healthy competition in the marketplace.
Who wants to run this joint?......oh, wait.
I hope the baked goods are extensive and semi-affordable. I will buy truckloads of stuff.Â

The question is  who wants to make History and bring marijuana into the state of Washington and other states are gonna follow and this persons gonna MAKE HISTORY and become a very wealthy person.Its not gonna be one person so the state of Washington needs to put together a  TEAM who will handle this as its gonna all be new and gonna make millions for Washington and unlike booze, we won't have read every weekend about how someone was killed by marijuana drive like we do B OOZE.....
So he has to sample everything they sell I assume since unlike alcohol he can't verify without trying?

 @FreedomRocks No you don't need to smoke it to see what kind of pot it is, as smelling it can tell you all you need to know about it.You have to be expect to know that. Pot is a lot like booze as there all lots of different kinds of pot, some make you sleepy and some make you get up and go go go just different highs and like booze the better the pot the more you pay.I was a pothead for 10 yrs and grew out of it with age and just stopped no big deal but i got friends today who quit booze 20 yrs ago and they still have problems not drinking and go to meetings.

I'm sure there exist plenty of qualified people... it's just that the ones that are most likely to be the responsible, capable ones are the most likely to be cautious about putting themselves forward until they see how things go. I personally know several people - all educated, all full-time employees, who would LOVE to be doing their own business as things get going - but there's still a *little* too much risk for their peace of mind.
What the heck? There's an app for that!

Hey, I have a sister that can really cook some brownies................... I heard.
Somebody's dream job. How will they fill out the federal tax forms? I don't think they have any real concept of how many applicants they will get. Better have a bunch of snacks and stuff.
