Eugene firm recalls 3,800 bicycles

EUGENE, Ore. - Bike Friday is recalling 3,800 Tikit Folding Bicycles after reports of broken handlebar stems.

The bicycles were manufactured in the United States.
WHY: The bike's handlebar stem can break and cause the rider to lose control, posing a fall hazard to the consumer.

HOW MANY: About 3,800.

Not good.
Â
I lost a handle bar stem on a Harley once. I had to grab the forks to steer till I slowed down enough so that I could fall off with minimal damage.
These bikes are good for traveling or for storage in small apartments because they will collapse/fold-up and fit in luggage or the back of a closet. The gear ratios are worked out so they are effective for long rides but, of course, they are not as efficient as a regular bike.
Â
I have never seen a hipster ride one of these bikes; they are always ridden by middle aged very liberal and progressive thinkers who are exceedingly cautious riders and follow a set of rules that are far more restrictive than any of the current laws. Â
Â
The bikes are favored by engineers and they are fairly expensive.
 @IcarusÂ
None of the ones I have seen riding these bikes are every wearing a helmet. What's up with that.
a stump in sammies bike plan
For pete's sake, just look at the thing! What kind of engineer thought that an aspect ratio like that was going to survive a pudgy rider on a rough road?
