Portland residents earn considerably less than their neighbors in Seattle, but just a tad more than the citizens of Albany, N.Y. and Detroit.
A Business Journal analysis of the collective salaries of residents in 104 metro markets found that Portland residents make an average of $48,750 a year, good enough to rank Portland No. 22 on the list.
The ranking was based on annual wage estimates for more than 800 occupations compiled by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Seattle's salary average of $55,890 ranked that city No. 7. Albany and Detroit ranked just below Portland with a average salaries of $47,650.
San Jose residents earned the most, with an average salary of $69,670.
