Mozilla, maker of Firefox, to open Portland office

One of the world's leading open source tech brands has settled on the Brewery Blocks for its Portland outpost.

Mountain View, Calif.-based Mozilla Corp. said today it will open an office in the Brewery Blocks in the Pearl District this month. It will be Mozilla's first U.S. office outside of the Bay Area.

Mozilla has about 26 Portland employees working out of the Collective Agency collaborative space.

The company — a nonprofit — said it will expand to about 40 staff members in its new location.

The expansion comes as Mozilla ramps up deployment of its mobile phone operating system, Firefox OS. Last week, the company announced that the first Firefox phones were being distributed in Europe through Deutsche Telekom.

The company said its Portland staff will be working on the Firefox OS system, and will also include network operating controllers and employees working across web development and gaming.

The Brewery Blocks offices include dedicated space for the local open source community.

A spokesman said Mozilla scouted Portland for two years before choosing to make the Pearl District its local home.
