BEAVERTON, Ore. - School officials were surprised to learn Wednesday that a man at a professional cheerleading school now accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old Beaverton High School cheerleader has a criminal history.

Beaverton High School officials say the Oregon Department of Education told them David Aaron Chatman passed a background check.

KATU News staff members ran a background check on Chatman using an online subscription service and in the span of 10 minutes discovered he had numerous contacts with the law, including convictions for assault, theft and numerous moving violations in the last decade.

Chatman has been indicted on two counts of abusive sexual conduct. He is accused of sexually touching a cheerleader during a flight from Chicago to Portland.

Chatman has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The girl, 16, was a member of a private team Chatman coached out of Tigard. Chatman also worked for West Coast Extreme, a professional cheerleading instruction business. The club also says he passed a background check.

Chatman also got another job at Southridge High School in Beaverton.
