PORTLAND, Ore. - For many University of Oregon Ducks fans not able to attend the BCS Championship game in Arizona tonight, there is still a question about how to watch the game at all.

Unlike in years past, the big game will not appear on a free over-the-air “network” station in the Portland area. You will have to be a pay subscriber of a cable or satellite subscriber to see it.

The complicated reason for the “free TV” blackout is buried in legal contracts and agreements, but the short version, according to KATU General Manager John Tamerlano, is that ESPN “has retained the broadcast rights to the entire BCS series. It is their decision not to air the games on the ABC network.”

“KATU along with all ABC affiliates in the country do not have the broadcast rights to air any of the BCS games,” he added. “The 2010 Rose Bowl was the last free over-the-air BCS game that aired on the ABC network.”

For viewers who have internet access, televised coverage of the game will be streamed live.
