KATU.com's Weekend Get Out Guide! July 4th Edition
By Eric Collins, KATU.com Producer/ReporterSo it's Memorial Day Weekend, and, if you can afford the gas, you might be hitting the highways to go camping. As you find yourself pondering where to go, keep this in mind: There's a lot of snow still piled high in them there mountains. So a number of your favorite spots could still be snowed under. Just last week, KATU's Nick Winkler stood atop a snow bank at the entrance to Trillium Lake near Mount Hood. Timothy, Lost, Clear and Frog lakes were also closed at that time. To see his report, click here. He did find a number of campgrounds at lower elevations that are open, however. Some campers have planned in advance. For the more spontaneous types, you can check here for a list of first-come, first-serve campgrounds at state parks. Who knows. Maybe you'll get lucky. To check on the conditions at campgrounds in some of the national forests of Oregon and Washington, look here:
If you are planning on splashing around in a lake this weekend, you might want to read this first. The bottom line: The water's frigid and recent snow melt has brought a lot of debris down into lakes and reservoirs. So be careful. All right. Let's say you are staying home this weekend - like myself (because I get to work.) You don't have to go far to have some fun. For starters, there's the "Memorial Weekend in the Wine Country" event, where more than 100 Willamette Valley wineries open to the public for tastings throughout the three-day weekend. Many of the wineries only open twice a year - for this event and a similar one around Thanksgiving - so it sounds like a don't miss kind of deal. Also, on Sunday, there's the Urban Assault Ride in Portland, in which teams of two compete in a funky scavenger hunt around the city. Basically you've got to reach a number of checkpoints, each one of which has an obstacle course associated with it - things like bike jousting and the keg walk. The good news? There's still time to sign up.
I think this one is called "Indiana Jones: Retirement Home of Doom." No wait, it's "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." Regardless, many are sure to be lining up in droves to be among the first to see the movie. Here's a list of theaters showing it. Have a good one! |

And, finally, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that the latest Indiana Jones movie hits theaters Thursday as the summer blockbuster season kicks into high gear.
