Disney working on stand-alone 'Star Wars' films

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Disney is mining The Force for even more new films.
Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Iger said Tuesday that screenwriters Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are working on stand-alone "Star Wars" movies that aren't part of the new trilogy that's in the works.
"There has been speculation about some standalone films that have been in development, and I can confirm to you today that in fact we are working on a few stand-alone films," Iger told CNBC.
Iger said the movies would be based on "great 'Star Wars' characters that are not part of the overall saga." The films would be released during the six-year period of the new trilogy, which starts in 2015 with "Star Wars: Episode VII."
Disney confirmed last month that "Star Trek" director J.J. Abrams will direct the seventh installment of the "Star Wars" saga.
Disney bought "Star Wars" maker Lucasfilm last year for more than $4 billion.
The last "Star Wars" trilogy, a prequel to the original films, was released from 1999 to 2005.

So a series of random skirmishes between the Rebels and the Empire?

The Hobbit was broken into 3 films and the Tower Series like....what....27 films? Those movies would be so much more successful without a through story and more random characters appearing and disappearing.
I am all for it. New blood, new brains, new ideas. I saw the original when I was 12. I think you had to see it with a 12 year old brain in order for the original to have full effect. The people who complain about the newer films are usually the older guys like me. When I took my kids to see the Phantom Menace they went nuts over it. My daughter had to have every conceivable variation of Amidala. My mom and dad, who were about as old as I am now, saw the original with me back in 77 and the liked it but hardly felt the film was anything more than a bit of summer fun.
May the farce be with you!
The last three were such a lack-luster disaster with an awful cast, it's hard to think of what they'll butcher next. Being from the generation that stood in line for the original movies years ago (yes, I'm old) I hope they do the Star Wars series justice and not ruin it for the new generation of hopeful followers.
This I like MUCH better than the J.J. Abrams train wreck we will see.

There is a whole galaxy of people places and things to be explored. There are rebels all over and storm troopers, clones and tie fighters everywhere. Why not explore the unknown instead of trying to rehash the known.
