Elmo actor Kevin Clash resigns amid sex allegation

NEW YORK (AP) - Elmo puppeteer Kevin Clash resigned from "Sesame Street" on Tuesday amid allegations he sexually abused underage boys, bringing an end to a 28-year career in which he turned the furry red monster into one of the most beloved - and lucrative - characters on TV and in toy stores.
"Personal matters have diverted attention away from the important work 'Sesame Street' is doing and I cannot allow it to go on any longer," the 52-year-old performer said in a statement. "I am deeply sorry to be leaving and am looking forward to resolving these personal matters privately."
His departure came as a 24-year-old college student, Cecil Singleton, sued Clash for more than $5 million Tuesday, accusing the actor of engaging in sexual behavior with him when he was 15. Singleton charged that Clash made a habit of trolling gay chat lines for underage boys and meeting them for sex.
It was the second such allegation in just over a week. On Nov. 12, a man in his 20s said he had sex with Clash at age 16. A day later, though, the young man recanted, saying their relationship was adult and consensual.
Clash was a young puppeteer at "Sesame Street" in the mid-1980s when was assigned a little-used puppet now known as Elmo and turned him into a star, creating his high-pitched voice and child-like personality. Clash also served as the show's senior Muppet coordinator and Muppet captain, winning 23 daytime Emmy awards and one prime-time Emmy.
In a statement, Sesame Workshop said that "the controversy surrounding Kevin's personal life has become a distraction that none of us want," and that Clash had concluded "he can no longer be effective in his job."
"This is a sad day for Sesame Street," the company said.
Clash did not address the new allegations. He said previously that he had an adult and consensual relationship with the first accuser. The divorced father of a grown daughter, he acknowledged that he is gay.
At a news conference Tuesday, Singleton said he and Clash met on a gay chat line when he was 15, and for a two-week period, they had sexual contact but not intercourse. He said he didn't know what Clash did for a living until he was 19 and Googled the man's name.
"I was shocked when I found out what he did for a living," said Singleton, a student in criminal psychology who lives in New York but would not say where he goes to school.
He said he didn't consider speaking up until he heard about last week's accusation.
"I thought I was a unique circumstance," Singleton said. "I did not know that it was something he had done habitually."
Singleton's lawyer, Jeff Herman, said he had been contacted by two other potential victims and expects additional legal action. Sex with a person under 17 is a felony in New York if the perpetrator is 21 or older.
Elmo has been a major moneymaker for Sesame Workshop. By one estimate, Elmo toys account for one-half to two-thirds of the $75 million in annual sales the Sesame Street toy line generates for Hasbro.
Clash became something of a star himself. In 2006, he published an autobiography, "My Life as a Furry Red Monster," and he was the subject of the 2011 documentary "Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey."
Episodes with Clash performing as Elmo will presumably continue well into 2014. Taping of season No. 44 will wrap by mid-December and will begin airing next September, according to someone close to the show who spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to publicly discuss details of its production.
As for who might take over as Elmo, other "Sesame Street" puppeteers have been trained to serve as Clash's stand-in, Sesame Workshop said. "Elmo is bigger than any one person," the company said last week.
On Tuesday, Hasbro echoed that sentiment with its own statement: "We are confident that Elmo will remain an integral part of Sesame Street and that Sesame Street toys will continue to delight children for years to come."

No! Not Elmo! I always wondered about that damn bird, but I never suspected Elmo.
first burt and ernie, now this
sooo no more annoying red puppet?

Â
 @franksbeansÂ
Â
No he will still take up 20% of Sesame Street.
Â
So there is likely only 6-something Elmo episodes. Since something like 1991 Elmo has taken up more than a quarter of the show. That means they must have reused episodes over and over again for at least 15 years.(Not a big deal since most kids like repeats or grew out of earlier episodes)
Â
Now there is âElmo the Musicalâ. I bet all of those episodes are already filmed (most is green screen post) therefore Clashâs only job in the recent months is promotion.
Â
So you can âlook forwardâ to another 15 or so years of Elmo.
Â
Well, if he needs a job, maybe he could be our new mayor
@archon312 In you weren't paying attention, there is a new mayor coming into town.
The 21st century scarlet letter strikes again.Â
Â
I sincerely hope for all parties concerned that the truth can be discovered, and made public with just as much feverent passion as the accusations have.Â
Â
I have no way (as do anyone other than the accuser & Mr Clash) to know for certain if there is any validity to the accusations, but the first thought that comes to mind is that Sesame Workshop has really, really deep pockets. Such an accusation is an obvious 'black eye' to their programs. I don't know if they'd be more predisposed towards settling (along with a legal non-disclosure agreement), of if they'd be more inclined to take it to trial in order to clear their name.Â
Â
Either way, it's just a sad day in Elmos world.Â
 @MarkKpicÂ
Â
It's "Elmo the Musical" now.
Â
Wonder when the Spank Me Elmo is going to come out.
Hey Sam Adams, looks like you can play tickle me Elmo now. I know Kevin is too old for you but Elmo might be just right for you.
@Poochie Wonder if Elmo would get a spread in playgirl?
Welcome to the United States of America....where there is NO SUCH THING as "innocent until proven guilty".
@bacana Innocent until proven guilty is only guaranteed in a court of law during legal proceedings.  It's not in the Constitution, the Deceleration of Independence, or even the Bill of Rights.
@pdxtvguy  @bacana Not to mention the court of public opinion.
@bacana Especially with the 21st century scarlet letter.Â
This is really sad....I thought when the first accusor recanted, that here was a time that someone was wrongly thought to have done something so wrong. But now this second one...I'm at a loss as to what to think. And 15 at the time...that really IS abuse of a child :( I'm beginning to think that Kevin isn't what he was thought to be. Except for being a very good actor :(
@fracas On some other websites, the accuser has already changed his story due to "typos." He also states that he met Mr. Clash through internet chat groups. Somebody else pointed out that in 1993 home computers still weren't as common as they are today, and certainly not internet chat groups. The accuser also says that he's only recently become aware ($$$$$$) of the psychological trauma that he supposedly suffered.
Â
I think that unless you're going to step forward with some hard evidence backing up your accusation, you're nothing more than a despicable gold digger. I'd hold back on having a negative opinion of Mr. Clash.
This is beyond sad, and I'm confused, if the accuser then recanted his story, why is Kevin Clash being sued for $5 million???
@pdxd Because this is a second accuser, the first one is the one who recanted.
@thebigboot This is so sad, though, I still don't quite understand why someone would file a civil suit in lieu of filing a criminal charge. IMHO sounds like someone who may have some greed and see's an opportunity, a la the Michael Jackson trial
@pdxtvguy  @pdxd Statutes didn't matter when all the adults said the priests abused them as a child. Be a shame to see this held to a different standard.
@pdxd  @thebigboot It's possible that the criminal statute of limitations has passed.  It varies between criminal and civil proceedings as well as the type of crime committed.  You'd have to research law in the state where the complaint is being brought up.
This is really sad. A man has a perfectly legal relationship with another man. Then one of them uses notoriety to destroy the career of the other. The really sad part of this is that Kevin Clash has done a great deal to advance early childhood education in this country. His contributions are immeasurable. And yet it's all been destroyed because of a spiteful lover and Clash's "inappropriate use" of the Internet at his place of work. Â
@Harvey 1701 Just like Sam right, but it's OK they are gay so its not child molestation or being a sexual predator. If the defendants or accusers were female he would be in jail by now and everyone would have an Elmo book burning. I guess you have to be hypercritical to be PC.
@oops Give me a break. First of all, the original accuser recanted his original statement. It was only disclosed TODAY that he did so only after receiving a settlement. Any child molester, gay or straight, should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
@oops @Harvey 1701 No, I wouldn't say that. I'm gay, and when the details of the Sam/Beau relationship came to light, I absolutely felt that he should resign, and there were many others in the gay community who shared that view. The accusations sound suspect to me for 2 reasons, the first being that this is only coming to light now after Mr. Clash did a well respected documentary about being Elmo, and secondly the high dollar amount being sought sounds very money hunger. If the police had probable cause to arrest him, they probably would have done so by now.Â
@pdxd @oops @Harvey 1701 It sounds like a figure that a bunch of lawyers came up with. And this isn't a gay or straight situation. It's abuse of a child. Now, in lots of eastern states, 16 is legal age. The second accusor was only 15, clearly still a 'child' according to those laws. But even at 16, just because the age is legal, doesn't make the kid an 'adult'. Would this crime be any less awful had a straight male (female) done it?? NNnnoooo. Straight or gay...it was a terrible thing that happened. And considering Clash's history, and all the good he's done...that's the sad part. Not that he's gay or straight.
@Harvey 1701 A spiteful lover? There are two accusers, how many more will come out?
@Thebigboot At the time of the article, there was only the report of the original accuser. Now that a second one has come to light, it only makes this even that much more tragic.
 @Thebigboot  @Harvey 1701Â
From another news outlet it appears it's the same accuser.
Â
He claims that he was paid by Clash for his recant and silence.
Â
Apparently it wasnât enough for him and he decided to speak out again.
Â
@Repoman @Thebigboot @Harvey 1701 Nope...two different accusors. The first one was 16 at the time and in some states that's legal age. This person was 15 at the time. Different guy. NewsWeek, NY Times...
Looks like Gitmo from The Daily Show is finally going to get his chance to shine.
Elmo says, "Elmo says bye bye."
Â
The thing I find interesting is that Clash was married and has a daughter, although fro some reason it's not on wikipedia.
@Repoman Yeah, I think it's sad when gay men marry women in an attempt to ''stay in the closet''. Hope we're passed that, now.
@Lips  @Repoman Isn't it possible that Mr Clash is bi-sexual?
@MarkKpic  @Repoman Yes, but that's not what he said. He said he was gay. I'm not trying to be disrespectful. My comment is in support of the gay community. That they no longer have to live in fear or try to hide who they are. I can see from fracus above, that I've managed to say something that's not allowed? Dang. My bad.
@Lips @Repoman And how do you know this??? Do you think it's totally impossible for a gay man to meet and fall in love with a woman? So what you're saying is...love is only for those that are straight? Leaves out lots of family members and friends :( Gay men have, and do marry women. And some have kids.
@badcat  @fracas By the looks of the photos of his boyfriend.. it would appear that he likes the look of a woman with the package of a man.
@fracas "Love is only for those that are straight"??? No, she was saying the exact opposite of that -- that gay people should be able to marry the person that they love, and not feel obligated to hide who they are and find someone of the opposite sex to marry, in order to keep up a front. I don't know why Kevin chose to marry a woman before he came out, but it sure seems likely that he did it because he was trying to conform to societal norms instead of being true to himself.
@fracas  @Lips  @Repoman Have zero problem with inter preferential marriages, as long as both parties are aware from the jump. Although my personal opinion is it's not emotionally healthy. At least I wouldn't find it to be. My comment wasn't anti gay, quite the contrary.
