Elmo puppeteer accused of underage relationship

NEW YORK (AP) - The puppeteer who performs as Elmo on "Sesame Street" is taking a leave of absence from the iconic kids' show in the wake of allegations that he had a relationship with a 16-year-old boy.
Puppeteer Kevin Clash has denied the charges, which, according to Sesame Workshop, were first made in June by the accuser, who by then was 23.
"We took the allegation very seriously and took immediate action," Sesame Workshop said in a statement issued Monday. "We met with the accuser twice and had repeated communications with him. We met with Kevin, who denied the accusation."
The organization described the relationship as "unrelated to the workplace." Its investigation found the allegation of underage conduct to be unsubstantiated. But it said Clash exercised "poor judgment" and was disciplined for violating company policy regarding Internet usage. It offered no details.
"I had a relationship with the accuser," Clash said in a statement of his own. "It was between two consenting adults and I am deeply saddened that he is trying to characterize it as something other than what it was."
Sex with a person under 17 is a felony in New York if the perpetrator is at least 21. It was unclear where the relationship took place, and there is no record of any criminal charge against Clash in the state.
Clash, the 52-year-old divorced father of a grown daughter, added, "I am a gay man. I have never been ashamed of this or tried to hide it, but felt it was a personal and private matter.
"I am taking a break from Sesame Workshop to deal with this false and defamatory allegation," he said.
Neither Clash nor Sesame Workshop indicated how long his absence might be.
"Elmo is bigger than any one person and will continue to be an integral part of 'Sesame Street' to engage, educate and inspire children around the world, as it has for 40 years," Sesame Workshop said in its statement.
"Sesame Street" is in production, but other puppeteers are prepared to fill in for Clash during his absence, according to a person close to the show who spoke on condition of anonymity because that person was not authorized to publicly discuss details about the show's production.
"Elmo will still be a part of the shows being produced," that person said.
Though usually behind the scenes as Elmo's voice and animator, Clash has become a star in his own right. In 2006, he published an autobiography, "My Life as a Furry Red Monster," and was the subject of the 2011 documentary "Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey."
In addition to his marquee role as Elmo, Clash also serves as the show's senior Muppet coordinator and Muppet captain.
He has won 23 daytime Emmy awards and one prime-time Emmy.
Clash has been a puppeteer for "Sesame Street" since 1984, when he was handed the fuzzy red puppet with ping-pong-ball eyes and asked to come up with a voice for him. Clash transformed the character, which had languished as a marginal member of the Muppets family for a number of years, into a major star that rivaled Big Bird as the face of "Sesame Street."
Among children and adults alike, Elmo was quickly embraced as a frolicsome child with a high-pitched giggle and a tendency to speak of himself in the third person.
"I would love to be totally like Elmo," Clash said in a 1997 interview with The Associated Press. "He is playful and direct and positive."
Besides "Sesame Street," Elmo has made guest appearances on dozens of TV shows. He starred in the 1999 feature film "Elmo in Grouchland." And he has inspired a vast product line, notably the Tickle Me Elmo doll, which created a sales sensation with its introduction in 1996.

I find it interesting that the "victim" did not go to the authorities, but instead went to Clash's employer. It's also important to note that Sesame Workshop found no inappropriate relationship between the two and had suspended Clash on grounds of inappropriate use of the internet. This has all the earmarks of a scorned lover who is trying to get back at his ex. If these allegations are false, I hope Clash sues the pants off the kid for dragging his reputation through the mud.
And if the relationship would have been heterosexual he'd be in jail (just like Sam would have been) and everyone would condemn Elmo and Sesame Street.Â
Â
It's totally an equal world out there with no hypocrites.....
Tickle me Elmo indeed. How much taxpayer money is in this guy's paycheck?
I'm just now watching the segment on Kevin Clash and Elmo. GIVE ME A BREAK!!! Bring on all the child psychologists and this and that....kids are NOT going to ask. They're just not going to even notice. This is the problem with today's parents. Children are NOT going to specifically ask about what is the problem with "Elmo". I'm just so tired of parents thinking our 3 and 4 years olds are all such geniuses. They're kids. If they're regular watchers of Sesame Street, what they're watching are probably reruns anyway. Parents want to bring this whole thing out into the big world and get prepared to "talk about it". Kids don't care. They won't notice a change. And even if they did know....do you really think they'd love Elmo any less???? Leave the kids alone and manage you're own problems. Stop creating them where they don't exist.Â
Something to lighten the mood...
Â
A new employee is hired at the Tickle Me Elmo (a cuddly toy which laughs when tickled) factory. The Personnel Manager explains her duties and tells her to report to work promptly at 8.00am.
Â
The next day at 8.45am there is a knock at the Personnel Manager's door. The assembly line foreman comes in and starts ranting about this new employee. He says she is incredibly slow and the whole line is backing up.
Â
The foreman takes the Personnel Manager down to the factory floor to show him the problem. Sure enough, Elmos are backed up all over the place.
Â
At the end of the line is the new employee. She has a roll of material used for the Elmos and a big bag of marbles.
Â
They both watch as she cuts a little piece of fabric, wraps it around two marbles and starts sewing the little package between Elmo's legs.
Â
The Personnel Manager starts laughing hysterically. After several minutes he pulls himself together, walks over to the woman and says "I am sorry, I guess you misunderstood me yesterday, I said, your job is to give Elmo "two test tickles".
Â
 @Mikey Soooo stupid, I couldn't quit laughing.
Sounds like some little immature gold digger wants a big payday.
Got to love these alternative lifestyles. All he was doing was celebrating diversity. Just ask Sam Adams.Â
i'm burning my entire elmo toy collection. must get gas on the way home
@Phuzz Good thing...people were starting to talk...  ;-)
Poor Elmo! That guy had his hand up Elmo's hole!
 @QuandoQuandoQuando It's called Puppeteering.
From what I hear, only the kinkiest of people get into it.
When people started going after priests dozens of years after the fact, people supported them. When Sandusky fiasco happened, people were ready to shut down the program. This happens and suddenly, screw the victim? Excellent! Hope we lambast everyone else who claims molestation!
@Thebigboot I'll just copy my response from your question to me below:
Â
Not the same at all. Â The boys/parents reported the abuse immediately and the BSA/(and Catholic church for that matter) ignored it and even covered it up. Â In this case, the so-called "abuse" didn't even get reported for 7 years but the man is having his name smeared all over by the media because he's a celebrity. Â Quite different situations altogether.
Â
I have a feeling that the so-called victim had a consensual relationship with this Elmo guy until something ticked him off so now he's sticking it to Elmo for money (or notoriety) years later.  This "boy" has to prove that they had sex before he was 17.  The burden of proof is on him and not easily proven.  Until then it's not fair to drag this guy's name through the mud.
@negativerep  @Thebigboot Sounds like the Mayor Sam Adams saga.  Doesn't get reported until years go by and someone is up for election.  But in that situation, it was the perpetrator that got plastered all over the news and the so called victim doesn't.  They were both consenting adults when the facts came to light but he was legally underage when the crime occurred.
Â
So it's ok to drag someone's name through the mud only when you agree with that person's ideals. Â Otherwise, drag away.
At 16, especially today, most kids" know exactly what they're doing. At 16, I was involved with a much older person, whom I pursued. When we broke up, I didn't go running to the cops.I bet any amount of money, the "kid" lied and said he was 18.This just stinks of "I want money"...
@Christopher Canary My guess is that he had attempted to extort money, and when that didn't pan out, he's now doing this.
@pdxd  @Christopher Canary Sound exactly like what he's doing.
He'll try that with the wrong person and end up a statistic.
It is only natural that he would seek a Human Partner, he has been feeling up Elmo for how many years?
Big Bird is gay, why doesn't he just come out of the closet.
@luckyman  You mean "why doesn't he just come out of the nest"...
Shouldn't this be in the "offbeat" section?
@Reflect I think you accidentally rearrange off and beat by mistake.
Bah... making accusations 7 years after the crime is just BS. Â I think there's something a bit more on the political side going on here.
Â
@negativerep Was it BS when all those adults accused the priests of molesting them how many years before they went public? I guess it's just ok when no 'celebrities" are involved.
@Thebigboot Not the same at all.  The boys/parents reported the abuse immediately and the BSA/(and Catholic church for that matter) ignored it.  In this case, the so-called "abuse" didn't even get reported for 7 years but the man is having his name smeared all over by the media because he's a celebrity.  Quite different situations altogether.
This definitely gives a new meaning to "tickle me elmo"!
It's pretty sad, really... All it takes is an accusation, and... well... Just look at the posts here on this forum.Â
Â
I don't know (nor does anyone but Mr Clash and his accuser) if the accusations are founded or not, but it hits on several hot button topics, and has the bonus of also being Sesame Street/ public broadcasting (a current conservative whipping post).
Â
Frankly, given that neither the police or internal investigations have found any cause to charge him..... This really is just more National Enquirer level 'news'.Â
The 23 year old "under age" is probably just pissed because his relationship is failing. Sounds like a scorned drama queen to me. Innocent until proven guilty folks. That's what the process is for.
@PDXBEAR This happened when the accusor was only 16....I seriously doubt this relationship has lasted these 7 years. At 23, he now wants to tell all? No sympathies from me :( Maybe if still 16, but not now.
@fracas The only thing I can think of is that perhaps they knew eachother before the person was 18 or right around there, perhaps he didn't fully know who Mr. Clash was, and now with all of the things Mr. Clash has been a part of, is possibly trying to obtain money in exchange for his "complaint".
...and I always thought Elmo was a gay tickle tub.
@PDXBEAR Elmo is the reason Bert & Ernie haven't gotten married yet....
@pdxd  @PDXBEAR Burt and Ernie are getting married in Washington State!
This is really awful. I do hope it's not true....but things being what they are these days, the allegations are probably true. What a devastating end to a really wonderful career and good works this man has accomplished. And for what???  It might not make a difference to the little ones coming up now...as long as Elmo sounds the same, they won't know anything has happened. But what about the "kids" that are now adults? My son is 39 and grew up with Sesame Street (before Star Wars took over :) It's one of those childhood things you always looked back on, and to see it tarnished like this is truly sad.
@fracas "... but things being what they are these days, the allegations are probably true."
Can you please explain what you're talking about? What is it exactly that makes you believe the allegations are probably true? (I'm just curious - not trying to attack.)
@gofigure @fracas You can't turn on the news or pick up a newspaper without hearing something involving this kind of abuse. Not just from you're neighborhood variety pedophile, but from people who you would think knew better. The fact that he considers a 16 year old to be a "consenting adult" is ming-boggling. Although legally an 'adult' in the state of Maryland (where Clash is from) and in New York (where SS is filmed), using that as a reason to make it okay with what happened is quite a stretch. A 16 year old is still a kid. As for the accusor...here is another person waiting a full 7 years before saying anything to anyone. So in a nutshell, you have supposedly decent organizations (Boy Scouts of America), religious figures who you should trust (priests and ministers), sports figures that we force our children to emulate (Penn State), political figures (Sam Adams and his boytoy)....why should this be considered otherwise? I truly hope not...but I truly fear it's so.
This is what msn's article says- 2 consenting adults? Â 16 last I knew was not an adult.
Clash told TMZ, "I had a relationship with (the accuser). It was between two consenting adults and I am deeply saddened that he is trying to make it into something it was not."
@Grammy54 I wonder if he is saying they have been in a relationship for some time (maybe it started when the kid was 16, maybe later, who knows?) but that only now that they have broken up the boyfriend is trying to make it sound seedier than it was.
@Grammy54 I think he's saying that he had a relationship with the guy when he was of legal age (meaning more recently) and that it wasn't when the guy was a 16 year old kid. The accuser is now 23.
@Grammy54 Age depends on the state. The age of consent in many is in fact 16 years old. It's not a federal law, just on state level.
@PDXBEAR @Grammy54 If it happened in Clash's homestate of Maryland...16 is a consenting 'adult'. If this happened in New York where SS is filmed...16 is also considered a consenting 'adult'. That might be...but it's a stretch. a 16 year old is still a kid, and still able to be taken advantage of.
Â
put him in jail
I feel extremely devastated by this. I'm a huge fan of puppetry and the Muppets. I recently watched the film about Kevin Clash and his rise in the world of puppetry by making the Elmo character all his own. He's done so much good work for children's charities with this character.  This is just one of those incidents that I don't want to believe and feel completely numb about.
Put Elmo right there next to Burt and Ernie.
So in which states can a sock puppet legally give consent?
@Festivus I could just see it going like this, "Elmo, can you please show us on the doll where the puppeteer touched you....."
Court is in session;
Â
Do you Elmo swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?
Â
I do your honer!
The law is the law, and if there was something inappropriate taking place in violation of the law, then he needs to be held accountable. However I hope it isn't true.Â
Is nothing sacred anymore, not even Elmo??? I am crushed.
@felines99...Elmo isn't guilty...it was the guy with his fist up Elmo's butt that's at issue here.
