Fox's Geraldo Rivera weighing US Senate run in NJ

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Geraldo Rivera, who hosts a weekend show on Fox News Channel, said Thursday he's seriously thinking about running for U.S. Senate in New Jersey.
"Buckle your seat belts!" said Rivera before announcing, on his radio show on WABC-AM in New York, that he is "truly contemplating" a Senate bid.
He said he has spoken to some people in the New Jersey GOP about a run, but he didn't say what they told him.
Rivera got a mixed response when he asked his 30,000 Twitter followers how they feel about him challenging either Sen. Frank Lautenberg or Newark Mayor Cory Booker.
At 89, Lautenberg is the oldest sitting U.S. senator. The Democrat hasn't said if he will seek re-election.
Booker, also a Democrat, has announced he is exploring a run but hasn't made clear if he would challenge Lautenberg in a primary, should he seek another term.
No Republican has formally announced an interest in running.
Rivera, who is 69, said he has commitments to Fox and the radio show, but "I figure at my age if I'm going to do it, I gotta do it."
"And there doesn't seem to be any Republicans ready to work against or run against" Lautenberg or Booker, he said.
The New Jersey Republican party did not return an email asking for comment.

hahahhahaha- whats next, Snooki for Congress!!!!! they would fit right in with the rest of the carnies!
Run Geraldo Run! Another surefire way for Republicans to shoot themselves in the foot.
Anybody remember what Bobby Jindal said last week? Â Something about "stupid party"? Â Yeah, you guys need to steer clear of the "never was really good at anything" celebrities, the whack "a woman's body can shut down during a rape" guys, anyone who's run for a national office and lost (kinda limiting that to Sarah, Mitt and Paul). Â If you want to win elections, update your party platform to be one of inclusion, give the kibosh to the Tea Party and the far right religions fanatics (let 'em form their own party, then sink or swim), and sound like you care about people. Â Oh, and try to avoid public camaraderie with anyone who regularly appears on FoxNews (Dick Morris, good ol' Geraldo, Sarah, Ann Coulter). Â There -- I've given you some excellent advice for 2014 and 2016. Â Bet you'll disagree with me, but you know I'm right.Â
 @SundownerÂ
Â
Every Democrat should hope that he wins popular support among the GOP; he would be easy to beat in N.J.
 @Icarus  @Sundowner I hope you're right.
Baaaawwwwwhaaaawwww.....that's like opening Capote's treasure tomb, again.Â
 @Icarus Or Capone's.  =)
 @Sundowner  Yes, I typed that out too quickly...fingers faster than memory banks but the recollection of the disappointment is indelible.
Â
I agree with your comment above but all of your sage advice is lost on those who see the world upside down and push a platform of ignorance as an advantage.Â
 @browntown  @Icarus  @Sundowner Wow, talk about opening a closet door, it's a door that has already opened before but I don't think all the contents were ever really revealed entirely. I guess that is where GR could shoot for a comeback. Good luck GR and don't let the door hit you in the ass!
 @Icarus  @Sundowner Capote's treasure tomb would have been a helluva lot cooler.
 @Icarus Hey -- I gave 'em my best advice.  It would actually pay off at the polls if they'd listen, but they seem to be dead-set in their ways.  Four years from now they'll be scratching their heads all over again wondering how they lost the women's vote, the Latino vote, the Black vote, the centrist vote.  Whispering here so they don't catch on:  They can't win if they don't have enough people supporting their platform or beliefs.Â
He really should align with the Narcissistic Party. That is closer to his belief system.
 @RalphCramden We have a winner! Nailed it.Â
 @Quaoptician  @RalphCramdenÂ
Â
Isn't that the party of Palin, Limbaugh, and O'Really?
 @Icarus  @Quaoptician  @RalphCramden It's the part of EVERY politician. Just like the first priority of every Pol is "reelection" and their greatest fear is unemployment.
 @Icarus  @QuaopticianÂ
I was thinking 0bama, John "The Hair" Edwards, John "the war hero" Kerry among others.
For his campaign chest, He's going to use AL Capone's Vault !
 @shadowwalkerÂ
Â
That seems like a hundred years ago but he'll never live down the disappointment of all that hype...disappointment will forever be his greatest legacy.Â
 @Icarus  @shadowwalker Prolly, but if this guy ends up a Senator, we're in for some "bigger" disappointment for sure. :)
If he could make a serious run with all his baggage - then anything is possible?
Glad I don't live in New Jersey.
 @medborgare Yes, we can all be glad of that.
