Jodie Foster reveals she's gay

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) - Jodie Foster came out without really coming out, and suggested she was retiring from acting without exactly saying so, in a long, breathless and rambling speech at Sunday night's Golden Globe Awards.
Foster took the stage as this year's winner of the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award, which had been announced previously. But her acceptance speech was anything but predictable as the veteran actress seized control of what is every year a noisy, boozy ballroom; the crowd of A-listers quickly quieted down as it became apparent that she had something serious and important to say.
The 50-year-old Oscar-winner for "The Silence of the Lambs" and "The Accused," who's been protective of her private life and reluctant to discuss her sexual orientation, was coy at first, suggesting she had a big announcement that would make her publicist nervous (the broadcast audio dropped out at this point, but for no apparent reason; nothing was said off-color). Then she stated: "I'm just going to put it out there, loud and proud ... I am, uh, single," pausing for dramatic effect before that last word. "I hope you're not disappointed that there won't be a big coming-out speech tonight. I already did my coming-out about a thousand years ago back in the Stone Age."
Foster joked that celebrities are now expected to reveal they're gay "with a press conference, a fragrance and a prime-time reality show. And you guys might be surprised, but I am not Honey Boo Boo Child. No. I'm sorry. That's just not me. It never was and it never will be. But please don't cry, because my reality show would be so boring."
She added defiantly: "If you had been a public figure from the time that you were a toddler, if you'd had to fight for a life that felt real and honest and normal against all odds, then maybe you, too, might value privacy above all else."
Foster thanked Cydney Bernard, a production manager whom she identified as "my heroic co-parent, my ex-partner in love but righteous soul sister in life," her former partner of 20 years - a relationship she never hid and from which she has two sons.
She also made it sound as if she planned to retire from acting once and for all, something she'd toyed with previously.
"This feels like the end of one era and the beginning of something else. Scary and exciting, and now what?" Foster said. "I may never be up on this stage again, on any stage, for that matter."
But backstage afterward, she clarified for reporters: "I could never stop acting. You'd have to drag me behind a team of horses. I'd like to be directing tomorrow. I'm more into it than I have ever been."
As for why she chose this place and time to discuss her private life, Foster explained backstage: "The speech kind of speaks for itself. ... It's a big moment. I wanted to say what's most in my heart."
Her revelation, vague as it was, nonetheless set Twitter on fire with reactions. Some called her words moving and brave while others suggested that she should have done more to be a role model for lesbians.
Ricky Martin, who came out himself in 2010, tweeted: "Jody Foster On your terms. Its your time! Not before nor after. Its when it feels right."
And Amy Poehler, who co-hosted the Golden Globes with longtime friend and fellow comedian Tina Fey, cracked as she was signing off for the night: "We're going home with Jodie Foster!"

I remember back when I was just a lad of about 11 or 12, maybe even earlier than that but honestly I can't remember perfectly, but I came out of the closet at some very early age and revealed that I was heterosexual. I was nervous about this, probably because of my age, but it wasn't easy and ya know the truth was that I was the only one who cared. I take that back, there were others that cared but it took a little while for me to hear from them at first (I think some of them were a little nervous at first also). By the time I was about 12.5 yrs. old, or maybe 13 yrs. old, I started getting a warm reception, so ta speak, from other kids my own age and it wasn't long before the real fun began. First there was "show & tell", then it was on to (my favorite at the time) "doctorâs / nurse", and then it was kinda like a club membership where we played "whatâs yer secretâ and âcan we see whatcha got". Now when I look back I have to say that it was really helpful to come out of the closet at that time because it wasn't easy for three to five kids to fit inside mom's closet all at the same time. My mom's closets were always stuffed with bedding, clothing and a few boxes of hand-me-downs from grandparents etc. Hey, maybe someday there will be a t.v. show about heterosexuals like back in the good old days.
Â
A homosexual! Wow what a revelation. Didn't watch it, not a fan. Don't care.
Is that what that long, rambling speech was about? I lost track. Besides, I already knew she was gay - she must have come "out" previously. Besides, who cares? Isn't this stuff pretty much expected from Hollyweird?
SHOCKER!
Â
about as shocking as the Clay Aiken
She still sucks at acting. She ruined Panic Room and Contact.
gay straight whatever, i love all women
Jodie didn't have to come out to anyone. Â I really dislike how much emphasis is put on sexual orientation, especially in the arts. Â Whether your gay, straight, transgender or whatever, it's no one's business but your own! And, Jodie, you're Amazing. Â
Boned...I doubt that Jodie is a man hater, but she might be a bit leery after having  John Hinckley Jr. shoot President Reagan, to get her attention.Â
My family had an experience many years ago in some swimming pool while traveling the country that involved Jodie Foster when she was a teen and I came away from that believing she was a 'man hater.' Nothing new on this front...
STAY IN THE CLOSET
does anyone really care?
Â
@dianned not me.
 @dianned only other gay women?
SHOCKER!!!! lol
When I was 15 I thought she was kind of cute. Of course, she was 15 too. Maybe if I would have told her how I felt back then she would not have felt the need to switch teams. I guess this whole thing could be my fault!
Â
@Pointblank Happens to the best of us but I imagine there are plenty of women who are very pleased to hear it. And if you think about it, what's better, pleasing one woman, or millions? Well done, sir!
Ellen Degeneres will be next to come out...again.
She's an inspiration. I absolutely love her.
@Iast boyscout Gasp. We agree on something.
@tigress He's just being an ass.
Everyone has their own path, their own time, their own place, and their own reasons for living their life the way they do.I think Jodie Foster has had to deal with the public a little differently compared to most people. She has the right to come out or not come out publicly if she wants to.
Glad she's happy !
I thought she came out like...20 years ago.
Not that anyone cares except psycho-religious nuts.
Â
:-P
Uh....so...?
Hmmm....let me guess...Oprah is next :(
Good gravey....we must seem like a perfect bunch of idiots. Didn't take a rocket scientist to know this 'secret'....and for them to "come out"...what for??? WE already KNEW THIS! ::tsk::
Duh. All of a sudden people are going to think she's not a great actress.
Â
Trivia: When she was a girl she appeared in an episode of Bonanza, and she was already full-on Jodie Foster.
@Playanekes I will always think she was/is a damn good actress. I am so straight I could walk don a busy street with my eyes shut, but have no issue with celebrities getting a little strange stuff. I have liked her for many years, I like Elton Johns music to an extreme, miss Freddy Mercury with a passion and like our mayor Stu. He probably doesn't count, he is not gay, but I still like him. I think people that put down someone for their strangeness maybe need to get a little strange.
Actually, I seem to remember her "coming out" quite some time ago. But the real issue is why do homosexual people/celebrities feel that they have to announce to the world their sexual preferences? If I happened to prefer 25 year old brunette women, I'm not going to hold a news conference about that.
@Nobody All she wanted to do was thank her partner of 20 years.  But because her partner is another woman, she can't do it without the media making a big deal about it. So she handled it her way, and I respect her for it. No celebrity relationship is off-limits to the tabloids, and gay people who want their privacy have a hard time being public figures. She doesn't want you to care that she's gay, that's her whole point. But when receiving a lifetime achievement award, she should be able to thank, among others, her partner (or spouse if people would stop denying them their civil rights).
@badcat  @Nobody Nailed it, Badcat. Well done.
Is this what the Globes are about now? Narcissistic.
It's only the HEADLINE here, that is fouled up. Â She did no such thing. Â She announced that she's single.
@SilverGuardian so you didn't read this part? "Foster joked that celebrities are now expected to reveal they're gay "with a press conference, a fragrance and a prime-time reality show. And in other news Fire is Hot
"reveals she's gay"..........
and goofy too !
Silence of the clams!
More Breaking News - Water is wet!
Geez, what a shock! Just because she made the grand announcement years ago when in her early forties the light bulb came on and she suddenly discovered she was "gay".
@Dick Magnuson She was with her life partner for twenty years.  I'm pretty sure that SHE knew she was gay.  And they raised two kids together ... Yup.  Pretty sure she wasn't 40 when she "discovered" herself.
@SilverGuardian  @Dick Magnuson The point is is she like other celebrities think that the entire world needs to know her personal private life.Â
Oh my god, she was already out. Idiots.
Well THAT'S no surprise. Â Nor is it news. Â No one really cares.
