Sean Penn: Port-au-Prince, Haiti, is like Detroit

NEW YORK (AP) — As the three-year mark approaches of the devastating earthquake in Haiti that killed, injured and displaced hundreds of thousands of people, actor- activist Sean Penn describes life in the country's capital city.
In the January issue of Esquire magazine, Penn compares Port-au-Prince to Detroit, saying, "It's not more dangerous, it's not less dangerous."
Penn founded a relief organization in response to the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. He still spends about half his time there.
The two-time Oscar winner says a child with a fever in the U.S. gets medicine, a cold bath, or a trip to the emergency room. In Haiti, he says, parents wait "to see if he's going to die or not."
The January issue of Esquire goes on sale Dec. 18.

Do 7% of Port-au-Prince 8th graders read proficiently?
Is 34.5% of Port-au-Prince on food stamps?
Is 45.7% of Port-au-Prince not in the labor force?

There is a 53% literacy rate. (Thus I am assuming less than 50% read at â8th gradeâ)
40% of children in some areas suffer malnutrition (there is no "food stamps" but there isnât food either)
There is over 75% unemployment

But i would still rather live there than Detriot.
Numerous similarities between the two cities
What an insult to haiti.... first of all ,detroit has more blacks and second it is way more of a sh*th*le.
 @FrankCastle AGREED!!!!!!!!
With a murder rate this year approaching 50 per 100,000 people, Detroit is among the most violent cities in the western hemisphere. It truly is a third-world pit of depravity and violence, not unlike Port-au-Prince. I used to spend time in Haiti before the quake, and at least it's usually sunny and warm down there. I can't say the same for Detroit...
 @Whobeke Just remember the guy making this comparisons is a marxist who idolizes Hugo Chavez.

Look on the bright side of Detroit - the Tigers played in the World Series this year.
The US government through a ton of money at that problem. Didnt solve a thing !
