Christy's car was hit twice by a car vandal.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Someone is still on the loose and slashing cars and motorcycles with knives across Portland's east side. It's a string of vandalism that started last spring.

Now Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward to anyone who can help police arrest and convict the person who has taken a knife to all kinds of vehicles.

One victim's car top was slashed twice. Christy left a note for the vandal after the first slashing, declaring she'd survived breast cancer and she would cope with this too. But the vandal came back anyway.

"It's still like they're trying to make a statement or something," she said Wednesday. "I don't know what sort of statement that would be."

KATU News first started investigating the rash of vandalism in July after a number of motorcycles were targeted.

Police believe they're now linked to hundreds of slashings – 20 to 25 every week – that began in Northeast Portland last May and have now spread to Southeast Portland.

"I'm confident that we're going to find out who's doing this and catch this person, but it might just take a community effort," said Detective Charles Lovell with the Portland Police Bureau.

Christy had her damaged car top replaced. But she couldn't afford the $500 deductible. Her dad chipped in to help her pay that off.
